MERU HERBS

MERU HERBS Meru Herbs is the trademark of a group of farmers who produce and distribute a wide range of Natural

Meru Herbs is the trade mark of a social project growing and packaging organic herbal teas, fruit jams and sauces on the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya, in the Meru region. All our produce is grown along a stretch of the Kithino river (a tributary of Tana, the Kenya's largest river) in Tharaka-Nithi and in Meru County. Meru Herbs is the spillover of a Water Project established by the CATHOLIC DIOCE

SE OF MERU in 1985 for the benefit of a group of local farmers, with funding from the Italian Government. Meru Herbs was founded in 1991 to alleviate the financial constraints faced by the local farmers, while contributing to the operational and maintenance costs of the Water Project.

Today, we mark one year since you slipped away in the quiet dawn of 17 April 2024.

We choose not to remember you with tears, but to celebrate you with grateful hearts.
We refuse to linger in sorrow; instead, we thank God for every moment you walked among us.

We carry a brimming gratitude for the years you shared your warmth, wit and wisdom with us.

We remember the countless moments in which your presence lit our days.

We also honour you on this first Anniversary through the pages of the book you completed with unwavering devotion—your own story, A BUMPY ROAD. Honest, unfiltered, and deeply inspiring.

The book is now available at Pauline’s Publication Bookshop and soon on Amazon, (two in one book English/ Italian)

Rest peacefully, our beloved Patriarch Andrew Botta. You are still profoundly missed, still endlessly loved.🕊️

In an online meeting today with Sally from MERU HERBS in Kenya we had a nice surprise. Our MD, Tracy, and Customer Relationship Manager, Nicola were introduced to Meru’s Founder, Italian born Andrew Botta. Andrew is now 94 and has lived in Kenya for over 70 years. He set up the organisation as an irrigation project for local families as a joint initiative with the Catholic Diocese and the Italian Government in 1989. Since then he’s watched the organisation grow into a significant employer of women who produce our delicious sauces and exotic spreads. We were discussing possible new products as we try to ensure a secure future for Meru after the demise of Traidcraft. It was a real pleasure to meet Andrew. https://shop.jts.co.uk/collections/meru-herbs

We buy Fair Trade products because we want to help make a difference in the lives of producers and their families in the global south. Campaigners have been doing this for decades through Traidcraft. However the recent sad news about that organisation means that the producers are set to suffer, unless we all step in to help. Traidcraft was one of our biggest customers, so without them we may struggle to place so many orders. We’re particularly concerned about MERU HERBS in Kenya who supply us with their delicious Fair Trade spreads and sauces. To be blunt, the situation for them could be quite dire, so we need you to keep buying these products from other retailers, and directly from us. https://shop.jts.co.uk/collections/meru-herbs

Meru Herbs is a co-operative of family farmers in Kenya who produce jams and sauces without the use of fertilisers or chemicals. They are focused on women empowerment, sustainable livelihoods, alleviating poverty, and improving standards of living. These all-natural sauces are made in small batches and have an incredibly fresh taste in every jar. No artificial anything is ever added - so Meru sauces suit many special dietary needs. What’s not to like?
