JOBS ABROAD: A KENYAN’S SHOCKING REALITY
I listened to a powerful interview on one of our local radio stations where a Kenyan shared his painful ordeal. He was promised a lucrative job in Russia as a security guard—only to end up deployed on the front line of the Russia–Ukraine war.
In just two months, he and others were exposed to deadly drone bomb attacks. By sheer luck, he survived with serious injuries, while many of his colleagues lost their lives. He is currently receiving treatment in a military hospital.
This is not an isolated case.
Many Kenyans are being deceived by fake or rogue agents promising well-paying jobs abroad. Some arrive only to face inhuman working conditions, extreme pressure, abuse, and even torture. Others sign contracts for one job, only to be forced into completely different roles under harsh conditions.
What should you do before signing a job offer contract.
- Verify the agent is licensed
- Read and understand the contract fully
- Confirm the employer and job role
- Avoid rushed decisions and “too good to be true” offers
- Seek guidance from official government offices or embassies
