The Cartier Étrier, also known as the Calandre, was introduced in 1921 during a time when horse racing was at the height of its glamour and cultural influence. Inspired by the shape of a stirrup, the design perfectly captured the elegance and prestige associated with the sport, which had become a symbol of status and sophistication throughout Europe and America during the Roaring Twenties.

Major racing events such as the Epsom Derby, Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, and Kentucky Derby drew enormous crowds, while legendary racehorses like Man o’ War elevated the sport to an international spectacle. With leisure culture booming and betting adding to the excitement, horse racing became more than just a sport — it was a lifestyle, and Cartier’s Étrier embodied that spirit beautifully.

This Grand Seiko 4522-8000 hibeat in steel from October 1968 boasts the remarkable 4520A caliber, developed in-house by Daini Seikosha and arguably Seiko's greatest movement. Launched in 1968, the Hi-Beat caliber 45 was used in both King Seiko and Grand Seiko models and is well known by Seiko enthusiasts for its incredible precision. How precise is it? My own 45GS regularly keeps better time than my modern mechanical watches. The 45 family of movements represents the apex of Japanese watchmaking achievement, with its derivative taking top honors in the 1968 Geneva watch competitions, outperforming Swiss watchmakers in the mechanical watch category for accuracy.
