Based out of beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, Ebiphany is our celebration of the virtuous “shrimp keeper” in all of us. ning the Japanese word for shrimp (ebi) with an ancient-ish term meaning “revelation” or “manifestation” (epiphany), Ebiphany is constantly inspired by what this unconventional, aquatic hobby reveals: the presence of beauty in the mundane and the often insignificant, the virtue of patience and perseverance, the disciplines of caring for nature, the reward of noticing fine detail, the value of community… Perhaps even the nature of reality, and the meaning of life! It is, indeed, as 18th-century English painter, printmaker, and poet William Blake suggests in his poem “Auguries of Innocence” — it is possible,

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand

Thank you Erica for displaying our posters in your beautiful home! Erica is a 15 y.o shrimp-keeper and aspiring artist who lives on a farm in Germany. Other than shrimp, she also loves horses 🐎 and is a HUGE space-nerd 🚀 who has keen knowledge about anything related to Space - from black holes, planets to the history of space flights!

Erica has certainly put her time to good use through the lockdown these past few months! She has taken on the challenge to work on sketching commissions, drawing portrait after portrait of pet-shrimp for her clients! Isn’t that amazing?! Erica is without a doubt our #1 fan whom we respect very much.

Erica, 美しいお宅に私達のポスターを飾ってくださりありがとうございます。Ericaはドイツの農場に住む、アーティストを志すエビ飼いの15歳です。エビの他には馬が大好きで、ブラックホール、惑星から宇宙飛行の歴史など、宇宙に関するあらゆる事についての知識を持つ宇宙オタクでもあります。

ここ数ヶ月のロックダウンを通して、彼女は確かに時間を有効活用しました。クライアントの為に多数のエビの絵を描くスケッチコミッションに挑戦して、すごいですよね！Ericaは間違いなく私たちの1番のファンで、彼女をとても尊敬しています。

私たちのブリーディングプロジェクトについてのアップデートです。

日本のCrimson レッドビーシュリンプX 台湾の太極ファンシータイガー系統のハイブリッドコロニーから生まれたF2個体を育てる機会に恵まれました。

10年ほど前, Caridina mariae (タイガーシュリンプ)とCaridina loggemani (ビーシュリンプ)をかけ合わせて新しく見事な表現体(頭部のまだらやゼブラ柄のあるジャーマンピントなど)を作りだすことができるとわかり盛り上がったことを、ベテランブリーダーは記憶にあると思います。

これら新表現体に対する需要は世界的に急上昇し、1匹100ドル、時には1000ドルで売買されるようになりました。数ヶ月に1度はブリーダーが新しい表現体を発表して、とてもエキサイティングな時でした。ブリーダーの創造性と忍耐力は素晴らしいものでした。

しかし、ビーとタイガーのハイブリッドが世界中に普及するにつれて、ここ数年では発表される新表現体は減っていきました。

私たちが2年半前に日本へ引っ越してきて驚いたのは、シュリンプ界はほぼハイブリッドのブリーダーで占められていたことです。レッドビー純血種派として、その流れに乗るのには抵抗があり、代わりに他の生き物のブリードをするようになりました。(フォローしてください➪)

しかしながら昨年このシュリンプ達に出会い、とても奥が深いことに気づきました。

見た目は最高品質の日本のレッドビーのようで、そこにほんのわずかのタイガーが入っています。(この微妙さはビーシュリンプの表現型を知らないとわからないかもしれません。すみません)そして思い切って今年の2月、再びコロニーを育て始めることにしました。そして今週ベビーが生まれ、とても興奮しています！

ご覧になっている個体はまだ若く、殻や色は成長とともに厚くなり色付いていくはずです。今後も時々アップデートをお伝えしていきますのでお見逃しなく！

Tank Update: Here is a little update on our breeding project. The group we have the privilege of working with are F2 offsprings from a colony of hybrids between Crimson (Japan) Red Bee X 太極 TaiJi/TaiChi (Taiwan) Fancy Tiger lineages.

Seasoned shrimp-keepers will remember the excitement just over 10 years ago when breeders found out that it was possible to cross Caridina mariae (Tiger Shrimp) with Caridina loggemani (Bee Shrimp) to produce spectacular new morphs (e.g German “Pintos” with Spotted heads, Zebra stripes etc.). Worldwide demand for these new morphs skyrocketed, pushing prices as high as $100s even $1000s for each shrimp. It was an exciting time as breeders were coming out with new morphs every couple of months. The creativity and perseverance of these shrimp breeders were extraordinary!

However with the mass proliferation of these Bee X Tiger hybrids throughout the globe, soon less and less new morphs were beginning to appear in the last few years.

When we moved to Japan 2.5 years ago, we were surprised to find that the ‘shrimp scene’ was mostly dominated by breeders of hybrids. Being ‘Red Bee purists’ 😝 we were resistant to join the bandwagon, and started looking into breeding other critters instead (Please follow us ➪)

However when we came across these guys last year we found them really interesting - they look very much like very high grade Japanese Red Bees with just a hint of Tiger (sorry you will need to be very familiar with bee shrimp phenotype to recognized these little quirks 😉) We decided it was time again to take the plunge and started this colony back in Feb. We are very excited to see some babies this week!

The shrimp you see are still young, their shells and colours should thicken/intensify as they mature. We will update our progress here from time to time, please stay tuned! 🙏

Dou’s entries into the IAPLC - world’s most prestigious competitive aquascaping contest hosted by Aqua Design Amano (ADA) in 2017, 2018 & 2019 earned a world ranking of 142, 110 & 146 respectively, out of over 2200 applicants!
