観音画家である木綿花（ゆうか）さんを取材致しました。

◼︎観音画家　木綿花 (youka)
東京都で生まれる。
ファッション業界で活躍していた両親のもと、クリエイティブな環境で育ち、大学では様々な感性に触れ、自分の世界観を広げたいという思いから芸術学部で絵を専攻する。
一年目はBOSTON UNIVERSITYで学び、二年目からNEW YORK UNIVERSITYへ編入。2011年、Bachelor of Fine Arts (美術学士) を習得しNEW YORK UNIVERSITYを優等で卒業。
大学を卒業後、日本へ帰国してからは、デザイナーやイラストレーターなどとして活躍していたが、絵への想いが強くなっていくのを感じ、2013年、画家として歩んでいくことを決意し、初めての個展を開催する。
日本を離れ、海外生活を経て、今までとは違う視点で日本を見つめる機会に触れ、改めて日本の伝統や文化に魅せられる。人々に長く愛され大切にされてきた観音様、そして古くから伝わる祈りの心に感動し、その心に響く絵を描きたいと感じたのをきっかけに、色彩豊かな感性と表現力で、仏教という概念を超えた祈りの心と調和の観音を描く。
絵画だけにとどまらず、kokotama(心珠)という木綿花自ら生み出したユニークな立体作品の制作にも力を入れている。kokotamaとは、“心を素直に映し出す美しい一粒の珠”という意味からつけられており、宝珠の形をした木の珠(たま)に絵が描かれている。見て楽しむだけでなく、手で包んで眺めたくなるそんな作品であって欲しいという思いから大切に一つ一つ心を込めて制作されている。
絵だけにとどまらず、アーティストやカフェなどとのコラボレーション企画などにも挑戦し、様々な分野へ自身の世界観を広げている。北鎌倉に2015年オープンした自身のギャラリー、kokotama galleryを拠点に現在活動している。（HPより引用）

Youka was born in Tokyo.
Raised in a creative environment by parents who work in the fashion industry, she decided to study art in university to expand her creativity and broaden her perspective.
Youka studied at Boston University in her first year, and transferred to New York University from sophomore year. She graduated New York University (BFA) in 2011 with an honor.
After coming back to Japan, Youka worked as an art director, illustrator and designer, but she could not let go of her strong aspiration for art.
Spending time away from Japan, Youka became to see and appreciate her own country from a different perspective. This led to her greater interests in her own Japanese culture, tradition, religion, and way of thinking. She was touched especially by old Buddhism sculptures of Kannon (Bodhisattva), which have long been loved, treasured and passed down through the history. Kannon has become Youka’s important source of inspiration for her creation.
In 2013, Youka made a resolution to start her career as a painter and held her first solo exhibition. She is currently living in Kamakura city and owns her small gallery there. Her paintings show her unique sense of design and colors achieved through her creative background. Youka attempts to go beyond the Buddhism concept that inspires the modern society and resonates in the heart.
Youka also creates interesting artwork called “kokotama”. Kokotama literally means heart-jewel. It is Youka’s original artwork, which is a small painting on water droplet-shaped wood. Youka's kokotama represents a drop that reflects your own heart.
