Hidden in the rural Kyushu, INOUE Kenji (4th generation) and Kumiko continue the tradition of the Akizuki Washi that has been passed down since the Edo period.

In this video, I introduce you to the couple that runs the last workshop of the samurai village of Akizuki. Of course, here you can try yourself at making paper or other experiences with washi !
 The Akizuki washi is an unpretentious paper that achieves beautiful printing results (see in the video), perfect for photograph, woodblock and lino printing.

On my quest of more hariko tigers, I've been to a Japan folk toys event in Osaka. I was hoping to discuss with a renowned Hariko craftsman from Miharu in Fukushima but he was not available 😭 A video was showcasing how Miharu Hariko are made, from washi paper of course !

However, I've talked with the kite maker of Tako Mo workshop (Aichi prefecture) and we discussed Japanese paper and kite making :)

Many others Hariko toys (and Kokeshi if you are more into that !) were exhibited and I gathered some informations for - hopefully- follow-up visits to the makers ! (My absolute dream !)

📍This Osaka event is held until Monday 18th at the Umeda Hankyu mall.
➡️ Hand-on experiences are possible everyday :)

Also, I'll post about a recent visit to the workshop that inspired Hariko's name almost 10 years ago🥲 Stay tuned !

Sorry for the wait 🫣 In this 2nd video, I am showing you the *delicious* art works .amelie.giamarchi has printed on Japanese papers from Hariko Paper store.

It’s a very small series of prints she made on Washi I have selected for her.

Marie-Amelie told me she had a delightful time printing on these mulberry and Mitsumata papers.

She also had the request that I send back an imprint to each of the Washi makers of the paper selection.

And I’ll show you how I happily complied with that request in another video.

Last year, I asked the artist .amelie.giamarchi if she would be willing to receive a selection of Japanese handmade papers to print her linocut art on them and shared her feedback on her Instagram account✨

I was really glad she accepted because I admire her abilities of designing, carving, printing and crafting.

Marie-Amélie created 2 art prints from a recent carving 🍊she made, and she wanted to give back one of them to each washi makers whose papers I had sent her.

I received her package recently and opening it was a moment of awe 😊 Unpack it with me in the video series !
