After the Kasumi finish

Kasumi Powder is made through our own blend and process, it does not contain coarse abrasive particles.
This allows you to create a beautiful Kasumi finish without introducing unwanted scratches to the blade.

However, the most important step is the foundation work before using Kasumi Powder.
We recommend preparing the blade to at least 1000 or more before applying Kasumi Powder.

The blade surface needs to be even, without uneven areas, and the sharpening lines should be consistent. For this, the blade must be properly straightened.
(If you need to correct blade distortion, we recommend our Knife Straightening Stick, Hizumitoribō!)

Where to apply the Kasumi finish.
(Before applying Kasumi Powder)

A Kasumi finish is created by polishing the soft iron (Jigane) of a knife, bringing out a beautiful cloudy/hazy white appearance that is characteristic of the traditional Sakai in Osaka finish.

When applying Kasumi Powder, it is important to consider which areas you want to refine and which areas you want to keep unchanged.
Before starting, carefully cover the areas where you do not want the Kasumi finish with electrical tape. In general, the area from the spine down to around the shinogi line is often covered.

By controlling the area of application, you can create a cleaner contrast between the polished Jigane and the remaining surface of the blade.

Kasumi Powder restores a Kasumi finish by simply mixing it with water.

Add water to the powder in a separate container until it reaches a toothpaste-like consistency.

Protect any areas you do not want to polish with electrical tape, then gently apply the paste to the blade using the included abrasive sponge. Once you have reached the desired finish, rinse the blade thoroughly with water.

To spread the paste evenly, it is helpful to first place a few small dots of paste across the blade before working it in with the sponge.

Especially during the summer, the paste can dry out quickly.
If it does, lightly mist the blade with a spray bottle or add a small amount of water to the container as needed.

Every detail has a purpose.

The deep grooves are designed to improve grip while allowing water and sharpening slurry to drain away.
By preventing slurry from collecting beneath the whetstone, the stone remains more stable and clean throughout the sharpening process.

Every batch of Komon Kasumi Powder is carefully sieved before bottling.

This process removes coarse particles, ensuring that the powder contains only fine abrasives. As a result, it will not introduce deep scratches while creating a smooth, even Kasumi finish.

Kasumi Powder is one of the simplest ways to create a Kasumi finish.

Just mix it with a small amount of water until it reaches a toothpaste-like consistency, then use the included polishing sponge to apply it to the blade.

Whether for touch-ups or refining the finish after sharpening, it is an easy and effective way to enhance the appearance of the Jigane and Hagane.
