The JoyKey. Born from a moment of sabotage. Heals the brass player’s split mind, as it did mine, for full focus and attention on our playing and the music.

“A sharp shock shot through my body.

I was emptying water before the Scherzo of the 5th Mahler.

Disbelief at calculated, deliberate sabotage.

Adrenaline and cortisol flooded my blood stream - Australian invective flooded my mind.

Reflexes took over and slammed the mouth-piece onto my lips and jammed down the high F thumb valve.

I played the first entry with my main tuning slide held tightly in my right hand in the bell!

Two long years later, this incident triggered a question from which a prototype emerged like a butterfly from a cocoon.

The JoyKey automatic water drainage system was born nine months later.

The fourteen JoyKeys on my Dieter Otto triple horn and five on my double horn guaranteed that no conductor could ever do that to me again. “

Come to the BRAWO Music Trade Fair in Stuttgart and see and try for yourself.

Hi Jim,
I would like you to put four JoyKeys on my descant in the near future. I'm looping Andrew into this conversation.

Andrew says Ken Pope has JoyKeys.

Dear Andrew,
Greetings from Concord, MA where I have spent the past two days adjusting to the four new JoyKeys that Jim Engele just installed on my Conn 12D descant. It certainly solved the incessant water gurgling problem that my 2nd and 3rd valves had been prone to in the past. In fact I can play for twenty minutes without dumping any water at all! The condensation of old has p**f disappeared somewhere into the atmosphere about me. In addition Jim cleaned out the horn (long overdue) and the valves are moving great - in short it's like getting a brand new shiny instrument without the plumbing problem.
I'll be using it in chamber and orchestral situations in the next few weeks so I'll let you know soon how it behaves in the wild.
Many thanks to all involved and best wishes for the Fall.
Michael

Michael,
that is so good to hear! I figured it was the right solution for you! Can’t wait to hear how it goes in concert! Thank you for the update and thank you Andrew!

Dear Andrew,
Had my first official chamber music rehearsal with the JoyKeys this morning. Wallingford Riegger Opus 53 for wind quintet and piano. I can't thank you enough for freeing me from the drudgery of worrying about plumbing problems. In fact it's a little unnerving to have no need to pull slides at all. I played for two hours with no appreciable water buildup - I presume that it's getting microscopically dispersed through those four filters into the atmosphere around me. I was able just to think about the horn and the music as you mentioned was a possibility over the summer in our video discussion. These JoyKeys are a game changer for me.
Thanks again.
Michael.

At the time of making this recording, I had eleven JoyKeys installed on my Dieter Otto triple. Later after I moved off first horn and started practicing a lot more on the low F side, I had another three installed on the low F side first, second and third valve tuning slides.

The JoyKey, invented in 2009, is a paradigm shift in brass engineering.

Automatic water drainage eliminates the need for traditional, manually operated water key systems with all of their distractions and moving parts.

The JoyKey system ensures continuous airflow optimization without player intervention.

After 15+ years of field testing and refinement, we‘ve proven that continuous moisture removal directly correlatrs with noticable stress reduction, improved accuracy and consistency and player satisfaction.

The JoyKey automatic water drainage system is the 21st century breakthrough technology you didn‘t know you needed - until you experience it.

Zeit brauchen.
