What a season in Jökla river!

Since my last update the fishing at Jökla has been surpassing all expectations, with daily catches last days from 50 to 70 salmon!

In the last week of July alone over 300 have been landed by 14 rods. We fish 8 rods on the lower river and 6 from the the upper river camp, which opened on second week of July.

Not only are the salmon here in numbers, but the quality is outstanding. The majority of July catch comprised 2SW salmon, and in the last few days the grilse started to run and they too are of a good size and are in excellent condition.

After being flooded off for June, July has jump-started the season with a bang, and long may it continue! The overflow from the dam is not expected until late September (might even not all seson), so we might have a full season to fish the main river. The last time the overflow was late, in 2024, the river gave 1,163 fish. With the total currently already close to 900 fish, it’s going to be broken and maybe even been doubled!

It should be noted that this run of salmon is now mostly self-supporting, the fish are breeding well and our stocking programme has been greatly reduced since when we first started managing the river.

Bookings are strong but there are still some rods in upper river late August and also lower during 10 to 15 September, when fresh fish are still running the river. Please get in touch if you’d like to join the party.

Elsewhere in the Strengir rivers the little gem that is the Hrútafjarðará is enjoying a good season. The water level has been good throughout July, which has allowed fish to run freely. This hasn’t always been the case in the recent dry summers the west coast has suffered.

Our trout stream on the south coast, Minnivallalækur (Minni), has fished well and still draws discerning clients from around the world. It is renowned for producing trophy brown trout and has seen fish of over 70cm landed this year.

It is only getting better and new record in one day was yesterday with 41 salmon caught.

Jökla river on fire!

After a very quiet start on the Jökla this season, I’m pleased to say that we’re back on track and the river is providing us with some outstanding fishing!

Our season began on 23 June with the river running very high, due to late snowmelt and heavy local rain just before. This meant that fishing was restricted to the river downstream of the canyon and fish were difficult to locate in the very high water.
As we entered July the river began to drop, fish could reach beyond the canyon and catches improved immediatley and we are now landing between 15 and 20 fish per day, all of them beautiful, hefty 2SW salmon. The average weight is around 12lb.

The river has gone from 3 salmon in June, to 100 in the first week of July! We fish no more than 6 -8 rods and the daily catch per rod is 2-3 salmon. This has to be some of the best salmon fishing anywhere in the world!

An exploratory cast on the upper river produced a fish already. This section of the river is fished from 12 July, where 6 rods are allowed and have separate accommodation.

Although early in the season a few grilse are showing up, which bodes well for the rest of the season. Experts are predicting a good grilse year throughout Iceland, so prospects look good.

There are still opportunities for 1 - 2 rods to join us between 2 August and 9 August, plus some openings later in the season. If interested please get in touch.
