Hi everyone, Shiv Ram here from LA COSMO. Today, I’m excited to share a behind-the-scenes look at one of our favorite processes—extracting a beautiful, rich gold-yellow dye from the jackfruit tree.
Our goal at LA COSMO is to create garments that are not only stunning but also kind to the environment. This starts with choosing natural sources for our dyes. For today’s dyeing session, we selected heartwood from the jackfruit tree, making sure it was sourced responsibly. We always work with local suppliers to reduce our carbon footprint and support the community.
First, we cut the heartwood into smaller pieces, then set a large pot on the burner to heat the water. As it starts boiling, we add the wood and watch as the water transforms into a vibrant golden yellow. It’s an amazing sight. This part takes time, and we stay patient to ensure the color is deep and even.
Once the dye is ready, I prepare the fabric for immersion. I love using organic cotton and linen because they’re eco-friendly and take on natural dyes beautifully. We carefully place the fabric into the pot, stirring gently to ensure the color spreads evenly. The golden hue starts to take hold, and it’s absolutely stunning.
After dyeing, we spread the fabric out in the open air to dry. The sunlight makes the color glow, a vibrant reminder of the beauty we can create from nature. This process is so rewarding—it feels great to know that we’re not harming the environment in the pursuit of fashion.
As the day winds down, I sit with my team to brainstorm our next projects. We always look for new ways to bring sustainability into fashion, and today’s dyeing session is just one example. I can’t wait to share more with you as we continue this journey toward conscious fashion. Thanks for joining me today, and stay tuned for more from LA COSMO!
