This translation by Alex Danchev is based on a thorough re-examination of Cézanne’s correspondence with family, friends and major figures from the literary and art worlds. Danchev’s great achievement is to allow readers in English to hear Cézanne’s voice for the first time in his own idiomatic, idiosyncratic style. And he sounds rather different from the Cézanne we thought we knew – richer, wittier, wiser, more philosophical, more irascible, above all more fully human. The letters offer fresh perspectives on his artistic vision, politics, friendships, psychology, philosophy, literary tastes and classical frame of reference. They provide an intimate insight into the preoccupations and personality of a legend.

Painters, Ports, and Profits: Artists and the East India Company, 1750–1850 surveys the remarkable artistic innovations that emerged within the context of the British East India Company’s commercial and militaristic expansion into India and China. Extending the term “Company Style” to encompass the broad range of work created within the imperial corporation’s cross-cultural networks, this comprehensive exhibition catalogue celebrates the British, Indian, and Chinese artists—often unknown—whose experimentation with papers, pigments, and other materials produced astonishing aesthetic diversity. Compelled by new subjects and techniques, so-called Company artists profoundly affected visual culture within and beyond Asia, challenging notions of asymmetric power dynamics at the apex of the East India Company’s rapacious pursuit of profits. Edited by curators Laurel O. Peterson and Holly Shaffer, Painters, Ports, and Profits features more than one hundred objects—architectural drafts, burnished opaque watercolors, hand-colored aquatints, and small and large-scale portraits—drawn from the Yale Center for British Art’s rich collection and includes new research from an international group of scholars, curators, and conservators

-- His radical transition from childhood poverty in a Krakow ghetto to a glamorous Hollywood life among socialites
-- The psychological complexity and central thread of sexuality that runs throughout his films and his relationships with younger women
-- A culmination of tragedies in Polanski's life, from the Holocaust to the Manson murders to his sexual assault charges and subsequent exile from the U.S.

The “ghost eye” of the title refers to a condition that Tipu suffers from, that of heterochromia, or having eyes of different colours. Folklore has it that this gives a person the ability to see into both the spiritual and physical realms simultaneously. In Tipu’s words: “There are folks who think they’re very special; that they can show you stuff others can’t see.” It’s a quality that the novel itself seems eager to echo.

From ancient Egyptian shrouds to medieval relics, textiles have played both functional and symbolic roles in rituals of death across time and place. Featuring funeral hangings, mourning samplers, garments, and many other textiles and fragments, along with works by contemporary textile artists such as Nick Cave (b. 1959) and Angela Hennessey (b. 1971), this book highlights how these objects help people negotiate experiences of loss, grief, healing, and survival.

With over seventy textiles dating from antiquity to today, On Loss and Absence brings together examples from cultures and traditions around the world. Close-up photographs provide an intimate look at the wealth of artistic and historical information embedded in their intricate details and painstaking techniques. In four key sections—Death and Grief, Transition of Realms, Care and Healing, and Resistance and Survival—artists, conservators, educators, and scholars offer their in-depth perspectives on select objects and their context. Contemporary practitioners, including the Noqanchis collective of Andean weavers and Navajo weavers Lynda Teller Pete and Barbara Teller Ornelas, provide insight into the enduring legacies of Indigenous textile arts. A behind-the-scenes look at textile conservation examines preservation techniques in the larger thematic context of care and survival.
