This book initially delineates the names, period of Nawabi or Kingship and the extent of the territories enjoyed by different rulers of Awach. A detailed account of the penultimate visit of Shore to Lucknow and the last year of the Nawabi of Asaf-ud-daulah is followed by a Wazir Ali Miscellany, not included in the book of the author on him. Impact of the Durrani invasions on Awadh is a maiden study on the topic and leads to a better understanding of many contemporary political events. Studies on the Niabat, Wizarat, army, administration and the Naibs of Asaf-ud-daulah goes a long way in a better appraisal of the Imperial and Colonial contexts in which the rulers of Awadh interacted. Pre-Nawabi life of Saadat Ali Khan gives a well knit chronological appreciation of this very important ruler of Awadh. Factors responsible for the urbanisation of Lucknow, Harem of the first four Nawabs of Awadh, evolutionary trends of the status of women, some aspects of the science and technology and migration and impact of some ulema of the North in the South are new and thought provoking studies and bring these neglected aspects of the History of Awadh to the limelight in a generalised form. The book includes biographical sketches of some great personalities of modern times viz. Khwaja Hasan Nizami, Molana Iqbal Ahmad Khan Suhail, Jan Nisar Akhtar and Molana Imtiaz Ali Khan Arshi. The prevalent Muslim system of education, the Dars-i-Nizami, has been studied in depth, keeping in view its origin, courses preceding it and its nature and scope, merits and demerits and results and dissemination in India and abroad. It also discusses that Islam is indigenous to every nation of the World and the Muslims have their History intact in continuity since the first advent of man on this planet, from which they never break.

Lahul & Spiti and Kinnaur districts of Himachal and Ladakh region of Jammu & Kashmir form a distinct religio-cultural entity in the Western Himalayan region.
Tibetan Buddhism has been a living and thriving religion in this region. The popular folk traditions and material archaeological evidences amply testify that before the Tibetan Buddhism was introduced in this region, Indian Mahayanic Buddhism flourished here since the days of Kushanas.
Thus, in this trans-Himalayan Shangri-la, one may find Buddhism flourishing in continuity from the earliest to the present times. Some of the earliest and most outstanding Buddhist monasteries are located in this remote trans-Himalayan region. In this work, those splendid and ancient monasteries located in Lahul & Spiti and Kinnaur districts have been taken up for a detailed discussion in their historical, archaeological and architectural contexts.
Cultural, sociological and political aspects of these edifices have also been studied in depth.
An in-depth study of important ancient monasteries in the trans-Himalayan region of Himachal and the modern Buddhist and non-Buddhist Bon establishments has been accomplished in this volume. How far these establishments have been able to vouchsafe the traditional Tibetan customs and practices under the obtaining alien environment has also been discussed.
The present work is a result of strenuous field-work and deep research of many decades. All the available source material— traditional, literary and archaeological-has been pooled together to present a comprehensive picture of this exotic land in its spatio-temporal context. It is hoped that this pioneering study shall prove to be an important trailblazer for the regional histo-riography.

Benares, also known as Varanasi, is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and holds immense cultural and religious significance. Situated on the banks of the Ganges River, Benares is revered as a sacred pilgrimage site, drawing millions of devotees annually who come to bathe in the holy waters and perform religious rituals. The city is dotted with numerous ghats, or steps leading down to the river, each with its own spiritual significance. Benares is also renowned for its vibrant cultural scene, with bustling markets, colorful festivals, and traditional music and dance performances. Its narrow streets are lined with ancient temples, including the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Despite rapid modernization, Benares remains deeply rooted in its rich heritage and continues to be a beacon of spirituality and tradition.

A WALK ALONG THE GANGES BY DENNISON BERWICK.

Speaking little Hindi and no Bengali, Dennison Berwick set out to journey alone and on foot from the mouth of the Ganges to its source in the Himalayas. The journey took him oversix months and was undertaken for charity (the Save the Children Fund), but the freshness and love with which Berwick writes about India and her people also betrays a deep-seated fascination with Asia.
Accepting hospitality where it was offered. sleeping rough where it was not, Berwick only stopped off twice during the course of his journey: once in Calcutta, and once before beginning his final ascent to the source of the Ganges, some 12,000 feet up in the Himalayas.
This lively and graphic travelogue is an unusually fine record of Northern India today.
Intermingled with adventures of the Grand Trunk Road and details of diet and custom are fascinating digressions on Indian history, religion, art, society, economics and politics.
Berwick's experiences, coupled with an open and amused response to the ups and downs of life in India, combine to make this a wonderful portrait of India in no way eclipsed by such modern classics as Slowly Down the Ganges or To the Frontier.

Rabindranath Tagore was a prolific Bengali poet, writer, musician, and artist who reshaped literature and art in India and beyond. Born in 1861, Tagore's literary genius emerged early, and he went on to become the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for his collection of poems, "Gitanjali." His works often explored themes of love, nature, spirituality, and the human experience, blending traditional Indian culture with modern ideas. Tagore's legacy extends beyond literature; he was a social reformer, educator, and a key figure in the Indian independence movement. His contributions to literature and culture earned him the title of "Gurudev" (Great Teacher), and his influence continues to resonate worldwide.
