For 35 years, "Soul Train" took America on a rhythmic ride, celebrating black culture, music, and dance. Debuting in 1970 as a local Chicago show, it quickly became a national phenomenon, shaping the way generations perceived the black community on television.

The brainchild of Don Cornelius, "Soul Train" was a response to the misrepresentation of black America in the media.

Cornelius, a Korean War veteran and former Chicago policeman, wanted to create a platform that celebrated black talent authentically. He pitched the concept as the "American Bandstand of colour" to WCIU, becoming one of the first African Americans to create, own, and produce their own TV show.

Cornelius's charisma and deep, smooth voice made him the perfect host for the "hippest trip in America." His oversized ties, spectacles, and iconic sign-off catchphrase, "love, peace, and soul," became synonymous with the show.

At a time when African Americans were rarely seen on TV, "Soul Train" provided a positive portrayal of black culture. The show featured a mix of professional and amateur dancers, creating a dynamic and inclusive environment that mirrored the energy of a dance club.

The Soul Train line, a segment where dancers stood opposite each other, created a channel for couples to dance down, became an iconic component. Dancers brought their flair with moves like popping, locking, ticking, and whacking—forms that later influenced hip hop, voguing, and breakdancing styles.

"Soul Train" featured legendary guests like Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Al Green, the Jackson 5 and LL Cool J to name a few.

The show's popularity peaked during the 1970s. Despite facing competition from newer platforms in the 80s, "Soul Train" continued to thrive, adapting to newer genres like hip hop.

Cornelius stepped down in 1993. His mentorship launched numerous careers in the entertainment industry, and "Soul Train" continued for another 13 years under different conductors.

Don Cornelius passed away in 2012. However, the show's legacy has been immortalized in the drama series "American Soul," offering a glimpse into Cornelius's entrepreneurial spirit and the cultural impact of "Soul Train."

Punk, a revolutionary and rebellious musical and cultural movement that emerged in the mid-1970s, embodies a spirit of raw energy, anti-establishment sentiment, and a do-it-yourself ethos. It was more than just a genre of music; it was a social and artistic revolt against the perceived excesses and pretensions of mainstream rock and the societal norms of the time.

At its core, punk rejected the polished and intricate musicality of the prevailing rock genres, opting instead for a stripped-down, fast-paced, and often intentionally simplistic sound. The three-chord anthems of punk bands were not just a musical choice but a deliberate rejection of the virtuosity celebrated by their predecessors.

Punk was about accessibility and inclusivity; anyone with the desire to express themselves through music could pick up an instrument and participate.

The S*x Pistols, with their iconic album "Never Mind the Bo****ks, Here's the S*x Pistols," and The Ramones, pioneers of the self-titled debut album, exemplify the audacious spirit of punk.

Songs like The Clash's "London Calling" not only captured the urgency of the times but also reflected the eclectic influences that punk absorbed, bridging the gap between various musical genres.

Punk culture also extended beyond music, influencing fashion, art, and attitudes. The DIY ethos was evident in the homemade fashion of safety pins, torn clothing, and unconventional hairstyles. The punk aesthetic rejected mainstream norms, encouraging individuals to embrace their uniqueness and reject conformity.

Green Day’s 1994 album "Dookie" catapulted punk into the mainstream; opening the doors for punk's resurgence, influencing a new generation of musicians and fans worldwide.

Furthermore, punk's legacy persists in its commitment to inclusivity and diversity. Bands like X and Black Flag, from the Los Angeles punk scene, infused the genre with regional flavors and unique perspectives. The genre's influence can be heard in subsequent sub-genres, from post-punk to alternative rock, attesting to its enduring impact on the musical landscape.

Mohammad Rafi had a great admiration for boxing, particularly towards the legendary Muhammad Ali.

During Rafi Sahab’s 1979 Chicago visit, organizers discovered his profound interest in boxing and swiftly arranged a meeting with Muhammad Ali.

Rafi had always yearned to meet the sports star, and Ali, despite not having heard any of Rafi Sahab's songs, engaged in a 45-minute conversation about music and boxing with Rafi, his wife, and his son.

Expressing excitement about meeting another well-known Mohammad, Ali said, "I am the great Muhammad Ali from America, and you are the great Mohammad Rafi from India."

After their meeting, the two legends decided to capture the moment with a photo. Ali suggested, "We will pose like this. You punch me on the face, and I will punch you back," and they shared a laugh.

Amitabh Bachchan was also one of the lucky few to have had an audience with Ali. He shared a picture on Twitter taken at Ali’s home in LA with filmmaker Prakash Mehra.

In 1980, Muhammad Ali toured Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai in India. He fought Jimmy Ellis in Chennai and met with M. G. Ramachandran.

In Delhi, on January 27, 1980, Ali sparred with Kaur Singh, the Indian national heavyweight champion, for a four-round exhibition match. More than 50,000 people attended the match.

In a press conference organized in Bombay in January 1980, Ali stated: "I am happy to be in Bombay; I was driving here from the airport and came via Muhammad Ali Road—you have already named a road after me."

According to a February 1980 report published in The Telegraph (Slide 9):

“Muhammad Ali boxer spectacular, set yet another record on his first visit to India - he became the first boxer to kiss the Indian Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi. As soon as he met Mrs Gandhi, Ali jumped up, enveloped her in a bear hug and gave a loud smack on her left cheek. Blushing, an extremely flustered Mrs Gandhi yet managed to keep her cool and smiled back in acknowledgment.”
