deshframe goes big...quite literally! due to urgent excitement and hence lack of professional clicking, enjoy this tamil nadu art installation made for a lovely client, now a dear friend. all of 5*3 feet at about 50kgs this chettinad frame is lined with rich kanjeevaram silk. closeups to come soon :)

CONTENT:
now this state of ours, is so incredibly neck deep in art & craft. i could totally make a frame the size of a full wall if someone commissioned it. for now, we have the very cute katputlis or puppets. rajasthanis are known to weave beautiful stories around it and put up a super entertaining puppet show. in the recent past, i have also seen amitabh bachchan and salman khan puppets along with the oh-so-common snake charmers and horse riders.
the blocks are used to make prints on the many colorful jaipuri quilts that provide for cosy winter nights, among other fabrics.
the white bangles, worn as a set of 52 by married tribal women of rajasthan, start from the wrist and go right up to the shoulder in increasing size. they were originally made of ivory and are now thankfully made of plastic. the women also wear it to sleep and basically never remove it. it's considered a necessity for a fruitful married life. i say, let's change the rules for the next 100 years. make the men wear them.
the frame is bordered with 'gota patti' which in the recent past forms the borders of 99 out of 100 ghagraas. long long ago, they were made of real gold and silver flattened sheets. woh din gaye. else this frame too would have to vanished next to the kohinoor diamond inside the tower of london.

Had our 1st pop-up show at Kitsch Mandi, Bandra last month in collaboration with SWAG - saffron white and green.
Met lot of interesting people, bumped into buddies who date back to school days & was covered by Times of India! Full happiness!
Deshframe is back with newer, smaller desi beautifications at The Lil Flea from 20th-21st Dec '14, Bandra Reclamation.

if i knew of a way to frame food, i would totally do so because maharashtrian cuisine has no takkar i say! this one's the 1st frame i sold and also the 1st one i made.
CONTENTS:
the holy 'jhaadu' or mini broom - is prayed to, on the day of lakshmi pooja, by offering haldi, kumkum and incense etc. (a very less known fact by maharashtrians themselves:)) it is believed that goddess lakshmi is obsessed with cleanliness & visits the cleanest home first & that's why the tradition of yearly cleaning of home during diwali. she is thus prayed to in the form of a broom. indian culture is so profound that here we even alleviate objects to life. to see the all pervading divinity in a broom speaks volumes of our evolved spirit!
kolhapuri chappals - having received international fame by even reaching the milan fashion week, this pair of all weather leather chappals, reek of simplicity blended with style. kolhapuri cuisine is said to be so spicy that a common achhar tastes like dessert in comparison.
'mundavalya' & 'ambi nath' - the pearly forehead danglers (unisex) & the mango shaped nose pin (for the bride) are both a must wear by the to-be-married maharashtrian couple.
this frame is lined with 'khann' cloth which come is particular color combinations & form the saree blouse of many a adorable wrinkled-skin marathi 'aaji's' (grandma's).

this one's particularly close to my heart because i often OCD on being a 'tam bram'. this box frame is lined with exquisite kancheevaram 'pattu' (silk), enhanced with the original gold jari border.
CONTENTS:
marapachi 'bommai' - these beautifully dressed up dolls were originally carved out of the bark of a medicinal tree called raktha chandan. 500 yrs ago and more, these dolls were given to kids to play with while they were teething because that helped releasing medicinal juices in the mouth! the marapachi dolls are also considered V.V.I.Ps in a navaratri 'golu' setup. (google golu please!)
rakodi - forms a section of the elaborate head gear of a bharata natyam dancer. this arrangement of red, green & white stones is called 'temple jewelry'.
brass tumbler & davra - having straaang filter kaapi in anything but this unique cup and saucer is equivalent to watching rajnikant without his goggles & angavastram act.
