From Seekh to Shammi: Uncover Kolkata's 7 Best Kebab Joints
Kebabs have a rich history in India dating back to the Mughal era. While North India is renowned for its legendary kebabs, Kolkata has carved its own niche in this culinary tradition. If you find yourself in Kolkata craving these flavorful delights, we've curated a list of the city's seven best spots where you can indulge in a kebab feast.

The allure of Indian kebabs lies in their diverse flavors and textures, offering not just a meal but a sensory experience. There's something irresistible about sinking your teeth into juicy, succulent grills and kebabs that captivate the senses.

The Mughal influence on Indian cuisine, particularly in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), dates back to the 18th century when the city was a hub of cultural exchange. Persian and Mughlai culinary techniques and flavors seamlessly blended with local cuisine, giving rise to a unique culinary heritage.

Kolkata quickly embraced kebabs like seekh kebabs, shammi kebabs, and tandoori kebabs, which became synonymous with Mughal cuisine. Street vendors in Kolkata would skillfully prepare these kebabs on open grills, infusing them with a tantalizing aroma and a perfect balance of spices. The crispy, charred exterior encasing tender, flavorful meat is a testament to the culinary mastery behind these dishes.

Whether you're a resident of Kolkata or a visitor, we've compiled a list of the city's top destinations where you can savor these delectable kebabs:

1. Peter Cat
2. Oudh 1590
3. Amber
4. Bachan's Dhaba
5. Nizam’s
6. Adam’s Kabab Shop
7. Shiraz

Prepare your taste buds for a journey through Kolkata's rich kebab heritage at these renowned establishments.

(Kolkata) Biryani is life-affirming
------------------------------------------------------------
A little incentive can make a big difference, especially when it comes to Kolkata-style biryani. This iconic dish, known for its unique blend of flavors and the mandatory addition of aloo & egg, has a history rooted in the exile of the last king of Awadh, Wajid Ali Shah, to Kolkata's outskirts in 1856.

Recently, a 40-year-old businessman from Kolkata, facing financial and familial challenges, found himself in a dire situation, contemplating jumping from a bridge. However, he had a change of heart, not due to the intervention of family or friends, but thanks to the quick thinking of the Kolkata Police. With their keen understanding that the way to a person's will to live often lies through their stomach, the police took a unique approach to the situation.

Arriving at the scene after lunch hours, a time when Kolkata souls and stomachs are usually most content, the police gathered crucial information about the man from his distraught daughter. This likely included details about his food preferences, considering he was a Kolkata resident—a city known for its culinary delights, with residents often carrying antacids in their pockets due to their love for rich foods.

The rescue team, recognizing the power of Kolkata biryani to uplift spirits, offered the man a plate of piping hot biryani from a renowned restaurant. Faced with such a tempting offer, the man couldn't refuse. While threatening su***de by climbing bridges or water tanks is unfortunately not uncommon, this incident serves as a reminder of something Kolkata has always known: Kolkata biryani has the power to affirm life.

This Biryani joint, "BH Biryani," in Nonachandanpukur Bazar, Barakpur, is redefining the notion of affordable biryani in the area. They serve biryani on a clay plate with a banana leaf on top, a first in Barakpur. I was amazed to find that their mutton biryani, with 150 grams of mutton, and the chicken chap, a whole leg piece with 170 grams, are priced at just 70 rupees. It's hard to believe! The prices are incredibly low. I tried it myself, and I suggest you give it a try too.

Mayor promises to free shop gates
Kolkata: Mayor Firhad Hakim on Friday said the entrances to markets need to be kept free of hawker encroachment. Decongesting the entrances to markets and shops is one of the seven demands that the Joint Traders’ Federation (JTF) has submitted in the charter to the mayor on Wednesday when 5,000 shops in the area kept shutters down till 3pm to protest against encroachment by hawkers.

The entrances to markets and shops must be kept free of encroachment to allow easy entry and exit of customers,” Hakim said on Friday. He also acknowledged the other demands, including restricting hawking to a third of the pavement and keeping carriageways free, were justified but refused to commit a timeline by when the KMC and the Town Vending Committee would enforce the rules in the area around New Market.

Nearly a fortnight after the TVC demarcated a third of the pavement for hawkers in the New Market area, including Humayun Place and Lindsay Street, the civic body and police have been unable to push back hawkers who occupy over two-thirds of pavements and up to 70% of the carriageway. The deadline for hawker compliance has already been pushed back twice with hawkers making it clear that they will not move till they are rehabilitated in the same zone.

Police and KMC are also looking at stepping up vigil in other areas of the city to prevent fresh encroachment by hawkers. While civic officials in wards have been asked to keep a lookout, cops at local police stations have also been asked to do so. This follows reports from several parts of the city that hawkers were gobbling up pavements and carriageways, anticipating rehabilitation.

8 Local Products From Bengal That Have Got The GI Heritage Tag

1️⃣ Purulia Chhau Mask
There are three different varieties of Chhau dance in India, but it is probably the Chhau from Purulia in West Bengal that has the most stunning headgear. The masks -- made of pulped paper and clay and hand-painted in vibrant colors -- portray characters, demons, and deities from mythology. These distinctive Chhau masks were given a GI tag in 2018. In Purulia, the village of Charida is known as the village of the Chhau mask. On both sides of the main road in Charida, you will find workshops of these masks being painted in various shapes and sizes. Chhau masks are now displayed in several museums around the globe. Pick up one from the many outlets of the state-run Biswa Bangla stores or at a Manjusha outlet.

2️⃣ Shantiniketan Leather
The distinctive design of Shantiniketan leather products was nurtured under the aegis of the rural development program run by Visva-Bharati University. The leather is colored with vegetable dyes and then handpainted with its signature motifs drawn from nature. This is probably why you will find many animal-inspired bags and pouches.

Pick up one from Sasha on Free School Street or Bengal Emporium (Triangular Park, Rashbehari Avenue), Dakshinapan, or from the many outlets of the state-run Biswa Bangla stores or at a Manjusha outlet.

3️⃣ Bankura Panchmura Terracotta
Bishnupur in Bankura district is a town known for its artistically carved terracotta temples. The former royal kingdom of the Malla rulers, it is known for its ancient terracotta and laterite temples exhibiting the various styles of Bengal temple architecture. The most famous product from these parts is perhaps the long-necked horse which is seen in the Central Cottage Industries Emporium's logo. Almost everyone in Kolkata has had this terracotta horse as part of their home decor. To know more about the traditional craft, drop in at the annual Terracotta Festival held at the Panchmura village, near Bishnupur, about 150 km from Kolkata.

Pick up one from the many outlets of the state-run Biswa Bangla stores or at a Manjusha outlet.

4️⃣ The craft of dokra uses metal casting with the lost-wax casting technique, one of the oldest forms of metal casting that dates back thousands of years. The earliest example of it was found in Mohenjodaro of the Indus Valley Civilisation. Interestingly, this non-ferrous metal casting following the lost wax process has remained the same despite the advance in modern metallurgy. In West Bengal, craftsmen in Dariyapur village in Burdwan district have been making dokra for many years.

Pick up one from the many outlets of the state-run Biswa Bangla stores or at a Manjusha outlet.

5️⃣ Nakshi Kantha
Many folks out there will be familiar with the term 'kantha' - embroidery with a simple running stitch. Bengal is known for its kantha work which is seen in almost all products (saris and kurtas, notepad covers, home linen). But Nakshi Kantha is far more elaborate with small, tight stitches that create stories around rural life.

Buy it at The Sasha store on Free School Street, the many outlets of the state-run Biswa Bangla stores, or at a Manjusha outlet.

6️⃣ Madurkathi
In West Bengal, you will find a variety of mats known as 'madur' which are used to sit on, taken on picnics, and used to lay out on beds as a layer. A madur is woven from a local reed found in swampy areas, known as 'madur kathi'. Sometimes cotton threads are used as warp and madur kathi is used as weft. This makes the mat more pliable and foldable.

Buy it at The Sasha store on Free School Street, Dakshinapan. the many outlets of the state-run Biswa Bangla stores or at a Manjusha outlet.

7️⃣ Bengal Patachitra
The narrative scroll paintings (patachitra) made by Bengal's patuas or chitrakars (painter-singers) are now a GI tag product. There was a time when pataus would travel from village to village, singing a 'poter gaan' - the stories painted on the scrolls, unrolling each frame by frame. The scrolls were once handpainted with colors derived from nature and backed with cloth from old saris to make them more durable.

Pick up one from CIMA art gallery, The Bengal Emporium Outlet in Triangular Park on Rashbehari Avenue, the Dakshinapan shopping complex, or from the many outlets of the state-run Biswa Bangla stores or at a Manjusha outlet.

8️⃣ Handloom Saris
The handloom saris of Bengal are some of the best in India. But it is three handloom varieties that have been given the GI tag so far -- the Santipuri, the Dhaniakhali, and the Baluchari sari. The first one is a classic Bengal taant (loom) that originates in the village of Santipur in Nadia district and is a centuries-old tradition. It is said that the ancient handloom industry dates back to the 15th century. The Dhaniakhali is a simple, yet nuanced and elegant piece of wearable art. It gets its name from the village of the same name in Bengal. Look for its smart durey-kata (stripes) designs. The exquisite Baluchari sari lays out entire mythological tales on its silk weaves.

Pick up one from the sari shops along Gariahat and Rashbehari Avenue. Some of the most well-known stores are Adi Dhakeshwari, RMCG Basak, Saree Kutir, and more. Saris are also available (though in limited numbers) at the many outlets of the state-run Biswa Bangla stores or at Manjusha outlets.
