A glimpse of our “Creme” saree: a harmonious blend of French elegance and Indian craftsmanship. This tanchoi piece is inspired by the elegant curves and natural forms of French Rococo and Neoclassical designs. Woven in a French tone-on-tone style, its patterns are created through variations in texture and sheen rather than contrasting colors.

Our Posie saree, crafted on traditional Banaras pit looms, showcases the expertise of Varanasi weavers with its intricate Kadhuwa weave. It features a luxurious blend of mulberry silk and pure silver zari, electroplated with gold.

This saree also presents a re-imagination of the scalloped edges that were popular in 18th & 19th century France, along with an arrangement of dense foliage and French flowers. One of the most popular flowers in French textiles was the rose, associated with love, and frequently used in designs. These flowers were often rendered in a realistic, intricate style. Here is the Swati & Sunaina version, a collectable, created as a result of intensive research over the past four years.

Our new Varanasi to Versailles collection is a culmination of a decade in reviving and re-imagining the exquisite brocades of Varanasi. Its single edition sarees, dupattas and garments reinterpret quintessentially Banarasi fabrics and weaving techniques, taking inspiration from various styles of French brocades — from Rococo to the Baroque. These combine a use of the finest of muslin and silk yarns, environment-friendly dyes, and 98.5% silver zari electroplated in 24-carat gold. Such zari is the purest being used in Indian handlooms today, created using artisanal methods, and certified through a process pioneered by the brand.

A dramatic play of stripes gives this Swati & Sunaina Gold saree a contemporary form. Stripes were a popular pattern in merchants’ silks, and could be used to create a variety of effects, from bold and colorful stripes to more subtle and refined designs. The overlapping of intricate jacquard patterns of lace on a textured base was a characteristic feature of French designs in the late 18th century and provided the inspiration for this saree. The extra weft of silk and zari in this textile adds an embossed effect to the design drawing parallels with the embossed woven textures attributed to French Textiles.

Woven with mulberry silk and pure silver zari electroplated with gold on the indigenous pit looms of Banaras, this saree celebrates the skill of the Varanasi weaver with focus on the Kadhuwa weave. Inspired by the significant overlap in design features between India and France, we embarked on an extensive exploration of the weaving traditions from both cultures. The extra weft of silk and zari in this textile adds an embossed effect to the design drawing parallels with the embossed woven textures attributed to French
textiles.

Our “Moksha” saree draws inspiration from two very distinct features in French woven silks, the stripe and the lace. This design has a base of stripes created with weft play and showcases the skill of the Banaras weavers. The delicate lace pattern has been woven impeccably on the textile using real zari in two colours- traditionally referenced as the Ganga Jamuna in India. This saree celebrates the ability of the Banaras to experiment and achieve any challenging design successfully.

The first two pieces of the ‘Varanasi To Versailles’ collection // Tanchoi sarees, “Merge” (on Indrani) and “Creme” (on Dayana), are woven in a French tone-on-tone style. Patterns are created using variations in texture and sheen rather than contrasting colours. Inspired by the elegant curves and natural forms of French Rococo and Neoclassical designs, the diagonal rows of delicate vine patterns are meticulously woven using silk threads in a slightly contrasting shade to the base fabric. Both the pallu and the borders of the saree are embellished with Chantilly lace, creating a cohesive and elegant frame for the entire garment. The lace borders feature intricate designs that mirror the motifs on the pallu, adding a sense of continuity and harmony to the overall design.
