This is such a lovely celebration of childhood imagination. What makes the story especially charming is how something as simple as building a den becomes a grand adventure in the children's minds. The gentle rhyming text makes it a wonderful read-aloud, while Helen Oxenbury's illustrations beautifully move between the children's real world and their exciting fantasy world.

I particularly love how the book shows that children don't need elaborate toys to create magical worlds — a box, a sheet and a few sticks can become a castle, and suddenly they are knights defending their kingdom. Beneath all the adventure, there is also a lovely sense of friendship, confidence and the comforting presence of family. A warm, imaginative story that children will want to hear again and again, especially at bedtime.

What I particularly love is how effortlessly the book combines humour with early literacy. The repetition and rhythm make it easy for children to anticipate the words and join in, while the playful illustrations add plenty of little details to notice and talk about. It is a wonderfully simple book, but one that has the kind of charm that makes children want to hear it again and again.
