Millionaire Housewives tells the stories of twelve enterprising homemakers who, in spite of having no prior experience in business, managed to build successful empires through the single-minded pursuit of their goal, debunking a number of stereotypes, in the process.
The women featured in the book are diverse, both in the circumstances that propelled them towards entrepreneurship and in the challenges they had to face in their journey. From being first gen entrepreneurs to taking on the challenge of running a business legacy despite their inexperience, there is a huge range of stories in the book, all told in the first person. The stories are also varied in the fact that these women took to myriad industries, from those considered to be women oriented, to traditional male bastions.
If for SavitaChhabra-vice chairperson of Hygienic Research Institute Pvt. Ltd. entrepreneurship happened on account of unfortunate events striking her hitherto secure world, for AmbikaPillai-one of the most well-known names in the world of hair and beauty today-it was the need to be financially independent that led her down this path. For others like Indian celebrity chef Nita Mehta, entrepreneurship was the result of a niggling sense of wanting to do something beyond her traditional role as a homemaker.Amidst their varied motivations and struggles, Millionaire Housewives offers valuable lessons for homemakers who want to venture into entrepreneurship.
Through the twelve stories told in the first person, the book explores some important themes such as:
Is there a right time to start up?
Are homemakers intrinsically good managers?
How does one deal with the potent fears that stem from lack of experience and /or relevant educational qualifications
How crucial is reskilling oneself for the new role?
What about funding? Is that a big stumbling block particularly for women entrepreneurs and inexperienced ones, at that?
Are homemakers turned entrepreneurs best suited to traditional, so called “women oriented” industries?
What about naysayers?
The case of the elusive work life balance
Arundhati Bhattacharya, Chairperson State Bank of India was quoted as saying that the book is “a must read for those who think that housewives have no contribution to make. These real life stories will blow away many centuries' old prejudices.”
While making her thoughts known on the book, SaireeChahal, founder Sheroes.in felt that “Millionaire Housewives is a catalyst for the soul of India. We can't move ahead leaving our women behind and this book makes us all sit up and take note”
For Shaili Chopra, founder shethepeople.tv, the “journeys (of women captured in the book) marshall the rise of a revolution that's enveloping women across the world.”
The book has a foreword by Anu Aga, ex chairperson, Thermax Ltd.
