Blue pottery is widely recognized as a traditional craft of Jaipur. The name ‘blue pottery’ comes from the eye-catching blue dye that is used to color the pottery. Some of the pottery is semi-transparent and most are decorated with animal and bird motifs. The pottery is made using Egyptian paste, is glazed and low-fired.

Usage:
Blue pottery as a technique was mostly used to produce decorative items such as tiles, door k***s, pots, vases and plates. But now, the uses have evolved to include functional articles such as ashtrays, narrow mouth, beer mugs, candle stands, coasters, various animal shapes, incense stick holders, jugs, napkin rings, pen holders, soap dishes, trays, trinket boxes, wall hangings, bathroom sets, tumblers and containers with lids etc.

Blue Pottery tiles

handmade tiles the GI tagged certified craft of Jaipur Blue Pottery from Rajasthan! 

Material : quartz stone powder, powdered glass, Multani Mitti

Dimension = 4×4 inches

Making process: The clay is made by mixing together fuller's earth (multani mitti) with quartz and other natural materials. The dough is shaped into the ware using hand-molding techniques, sun-dried and fired. The ware is then glazed, hand-painted using blue oxide, and again at a higher temperature to fuse the glaze and the blue color, giving it the glossy appearance. The process is time-consuming and requires great skill and craftsmanship!

;.Blue Pottery is a traditional Indian craft, particularly famous in Jaipur, Rajasthan, known for its distinctive blue color and intricate patterns. It's not made of regular clay, but a unique mixture of quartz stone powder, powdered glass, Fuller's earth (Multani Mitti), and other natural materials. The vibrant blue glaze comes from cobalt oxide. 

The making process

The process of making Blue Pottery diyas (oil lamps) is time-consuming and requires skill, involving several steps: 

Preparing the "dough": Fuller's earth is mixed with quartz, other natural materials, and water to create a dough.

Shaping the diyas: This dough is then hand-molded into the desired diya shapes.

Drying and firing: The diyas are sun-dried and then fired in a kiln.

Glazing and painting: A glaze is prepared by warming a mixture of glass, zinc oxide, boric acid, potassium nitrate, and borax until it forms a molten coating. This is then powdered and applied to the fired diyas. The diyas are then hand-painted with blue oxide (and sometimes other colors like green and yellow) to create beautiful floral or geometric motifs.

Final firing: The diyas are fired again at a higher temperature to fuse the glaze and the blue color, giving them a glossy appearance and making them non-porous and crack-resistant.
