Are Bike Racks allowed under traffic rules in India???

Lot of cyclist enquire about legality of using Car Bike Racks in India, here is our understanding on this topic:

As "cycling" and "carrying bicycle on cars" culture in India is very limited, most of Indian states MV Act have not defined any rules/laws specifically related to carrying bicycles on cars using Bike Racks. However, We found a document from Tamilnadu MV Act and that's quite supportive and as per that both Rear and Roof mounted Bike Rack should be allowed. As far as height including bicycles from ground doesn't exceed 3.8 Meters and on rear side it doesn't go beyond 1.5 Meter beyond the Car.

We suggest our customers to keep a copy/picture of that in case any traffic cop creates any problem, in absence of any such MV Act in your state you may refer to the TN one from the link http://www.transportinfo.in/forms/tnmvr1989.pdf.

Mostly, cops themselves doesn't have knowledge of any such law or rule, so your confidence puts them on back foot, as most of the times their intentions are not fair when they stop you while Transporting bicycles.

In another recent development, Banglore has made provisions to carry bicycles on front of city Buses; that further enforces that Bicycles can be carried using Racks on vehicles. Please check that image as well.
