Small NGOs are emerging as the future of development work in India’s changing community-development landscape. Rooted in communities, these grassroots organizations contribute directly and meaningfully, moving beyond earlier models of sub-letting and passive roles. What once remained recessive is now becoming dominant—power with communities, not power over them.
In this evolving scenario, small NGOs must transform themselves internally to stay relevant and effective. Administrative systems, HR policies, financial management, governance, and compliance mechanisms need to be strengthened and aligned with the standards of funding agencies and government frameworks. Equally important is refreshing the way ideas are conceptualized and translated into action—sharper problem analysis, clearer theories of change, stronger monitoring, and impact-driven ex*****on.

Grassroots NGOs are driving real change on the ground—reaching the most marginalized, innovating local solutions, and sustaining community trust. Yet today, many of them struggle to survive. With FCRA funding increasingly restricted, the development sector in India is now heavily dependent on CSR support. While CSR presents opportunities, it also brings complex compliance requirements that small, impact-driven organizations often find difficult to meet. Strengthening partnerships, simplifying processes, and building trust are critical and potential solutions if we truly want impact at scale. 🌱

In the social sector, philanthropy means choosing compassion over commerce and putting people before profit. True impact comes from staying connected to the most in-need communities—those struggling even to secure two meals a day—and listening to their realities with empathy. When our approach is driven by humanity, not transactions, we create pathways for dignity, opportunity, and lasting change.

During a ToT on "Mental Health", I spoke about our brain’s nerve-energy can operate in two ways—outward and inward. When the nerves are scattered outward (1st figure), our thoughts become distracted, impulsive, and easily influenced by external pressures. However, when these nerve impulses are collectivized inward (2nd figure), they concentrate toward the center, enabling clarity, focus, and emotional balance. This inward consolidation of mental energy strengthens our ability to make righteous, positive, and well-grounded decisions, even in challenging situations.

Participatory workshop methods, pioneered by Robert Chambers, emphasize that genuine development emerges when people from every corner of a community actively shape the process. To make stakeholder participation more effective and broaden the collective horizon of thinking, facilitators must create safe, inclusive spaces where diverse voices—especially those often marginalized—are encouraged to speak and be heard. Using tools such as community mapping, problem-tree analysis, ranking exercises, and open-ended discussions helps participants reflect on their realities, challenge assumptions, and co-create solutions. Strengthening participation also requires transparency, clear communication, and continuous feedback loops, so stakeholders feel ownership over decisions rather than merely being consulted. When community members, partners, and institutions collaborate as equal contributors, the process not only generates richer insights but also fosters long-term commitment to community-led development.

The British Library and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Sussex have long been central hubs for research on global poverty, providing intellectual space for analysing and advancing Amartya Sen’s influential capability approach. Sen’s model, which reframes poverty as a multidimensional deprivation of freedoms rather than simply a lack of income, has strongly shaped IDS scholarship—from studies of the poverty gap ratio to broader examinations of social, political, and economic power that determine people’s real opportunities. As a world-renowned development research institute consistently ranked among the leading global centres for development studies, IDS draws on its rich academic environment and extensive resources, including those accessed through the British Library, to generate innovative perspectives on poverty, inequality, and human development, keeping Sen’s ideas at the forefront of contemporary policy debates.

My eclectic journey of learning at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, began with the transformative opportunity of being a Ford Fellow. Immersed in a rich, cross-cultural environment, I gained vast and diverse experiences that broadened my understanding of development in profound ways. IDS offered a truly participatory and respectful space where every voice mattered, and where sharing perspectives—often from dramatically different worlds—became a powerful source of insight. The friendships I formed with people from across the globe enriched both my academic and personal growth, making my time at Sussex not only a learning experience, but a life-shaping one.
