This book was published under the Hibbert Lecture Series, 1881. The volume talks about Buddhism, its origins, and its development as a mainstream religion. The first lecture talks about philosophy during its emerging stage, and it is discussed in parallel to certain concepts which were prevalent before Buddhism such as monotheism, transmigration, pantheism, animism, polytheism, and other reformation made before the establishment of Buddhism, etc. This series also covers the assessment of certain Buddhist canons like Pali pitakas and discusses the fundamental Buddhist concepts such as karma. Also, the hagiographical literature of Buddha and various forms of Buddhism practiced post- Buddha’s death are discussed in this lecture series. Overall, this book is written from the perspective of comparative studies with non-Buddhist traditions prevalent during the Buddha’s period and afterward.

Gowd Saraswat Brahmins (GSB) have contributed immensely to the Konkani literature. But after the Portuguese conquest of Goa in 1500, it further transformed Konkani into a vernacular language of the majority of Goan population. This book delves about the history of Gowd Saraswat Brahmin community and their affiliation towards Vaishnavism sect, as the community adopted the principles of the twelfth century ascetic Madhavacharya. The later part contains six classical folk tales collected from the Konkani literature, which is the significant part of this book.

Kashmir has a long history stretching back to prehistory, where many caves and other archaeological findings were discovered. The region’s name is found in Mahabharata and other Puranic texts, including the most famous Rajatarangini by Kalhana.

Also, Sanskrit commentaries written by popular commentators Abhinavagupta, Vasudeva, Utpala, and others contributed immensely to the history of Kashmiri literature in the early medieval period. During the advent of Islamic rule, many Kashmiri writers, such as Lal Ded, Habba Khatoon, Nund Rishi, Rupa Bhavani, etc., wrote Sufi, mystical, romantic, and devotional prose, which became the source of rich Kashmiri literary tradition.

This book is a collection of 64 different Kashmiri folk tales from different parts of Kashmir, which were composed during the pre-modern period.

One God, Two Goddesses presents three studies, one of Tamil myths of the god Murugan and two of goddess rituals: Gangamma in Tirupati and Paiditalli in Vizianagaram, both in Andhra Pradesh. All three essays search for lineaments of the cosmos that these deities inhabit and shape.

These cosmoi are characterised by the dynamism of their incessant interior movement. Should they become still, they would die. Deities activate and regenerate such a cosmos. The dynamism of Murugan’s cosmos eliminates the chaotic. Through ritual, Gangamma regenerates her cosmos through feminising it. Through ritual, Paiditalli annually re-grows the historic little kingdom of Vizianagaram, regenerating its kingship. All three studies point to the need to rethink cosmology in South India.

This epigraphic study of the political geography of two historical regions, Dakṣiṇa Kośala and Vidarbha between fourth and thirteenth centuries, focuses on the interaction of physical and human geography as reflected in the changing nature of settlement patterns both rural and urban and their political organization through time – an important exercise, based primarily on Sanskrit inscriptions from the period and the region.

The study contributes to further substantiation of the critical significance of the conception of early medieval in the study of Indian history. Since almost all the inscriptions are in the nature of land grants to Brahamans, shrines and monasteries, a related area of investigation is the extent of agrarian expansion in the context of political and administrative changes initiated by a series of dynasties across centuries.

This also involved a gradual growth of a sense of affiliation with the region or conscious effort to appropriate its identity by the ruling dynasties. The book critically analyses the data meticulously presented in tabulated form – an established method in inscription-based studies of early medieval India. It thus adds to our knowledge and understanding of the region as it has gradually evolved over several centuries through the early medieval period.

Before the advent of Islam, South East Asia was under the influence of Buddhism in most aspects of life. The majority of the people were adherents of Buddhism, though there were few followers of Hinduism and certain indigenous religions before the establishment of Malaccan Sultanates. This book is the English translation of the Chinese account, Nanhai Jigui Neifa Zhuan.

This book is the travel account by I-Tsing, who was a Chinese Buddhist monk who visited India, and South East Asia, especially Srivijaya during his stay from c.671-695 ce. This book comprises description of his early life, his departure from China, and his visit to India and South East Asia. His detailed description of the population living in the area, several kinds of literature written by Buddhist monks/teachers and laymen, and records of Buddhist practices are noteworthy to the students of Buddhism in Southeast Asia.

It is interesting that I-Tsing also writes about the dietary customs followed by the people, salutations, moral conducts, medicinal science and medical practices, worship, ceremonies, rites and rituals, and funerary practices. This is one of the important foreign accounts for understanding the history and religion in the South East Asian region during the ancient period.

Junjiro Takakusu (1866-1945) was a Japanese academic scholar specializing in Buddhism. He was appointed as a professor at the Tokyo Imperial University. He was a member of the Imperial Academy of Japan and a Fellow at the British Academy. He was honoured at Oxford, Leipzig, and Heidelberg Universities. He authored several works in Japanese and English including his The Essentials of Buddhist Philosophy and his translation of The Amitâyur Dhyâna-sûtra, etc.
