Subject: Plan_Career Break
A gentle reminder to save money and get ready for a Career break (whatever is your reason) with an excitement instead of anxiousness.
Inspired by a post of a fellow mom in a momâs community in FB.
No doubt there are and would have been hundreds (at least few dozens) of blogs or articles existing already in Google about career break/sabbatical but how many of us have read them in advance and if read or have saved in favourite bookmarks to read again when required then the question is
Question: Have you followed it?
Answer : YES
Well done!!!!!!
End of the topic
If the answer is otherwise then lets continueâŚâŚ.
Research:
Ask a Spinster a question:
For how long do you think you will take a career break during your maternity?
and she answers above question in a puzzled look and says firmly
I will not take a career break even if I am pregnant, I am strong I can work while I am pregnant.
Sure you can.
Who said u canât?
You can work till the day you deliver but once the little bundle of joy (baby) arrives then he/she needs you or you will be mesmerised to the baby. So you might change your mind to extend the maternity leave.
Now ask her the question again
For how long do you think you will take a career break during your maternity?
Reply: ErrâŚsure I will take a break until the baby becomes independent.
So you mean for 3 years?
Reply: ErrrrâŚNo noâŚnot for so long.
Why?
Reply: Cause I love to work
Why do you love to work?
Reply: It gives me financial freedom
Here you goâŚ..
That is why I am urging you to plan the career breakâŚ.
Her question: What to plan and how?
Reply: 1.How long you plan to take the leave?
2. How much to save depends on:
ď¨ How much you will need per month if you are a single parent?
ď¨ How much you will need per month if you have a partner on whom you can depend?
3. How much per month you will be able to save if you start now?
4. In case of freshers from when can you save?
5. Alternative: What are the talents or hobbies which can earn you money by sitting @ home?
1. How long should/will i take the leave?
Reply: In case of pregnancy - The thumb rule of motherhood is to breastfeed(will be referred as bf ) and thumb rule of bf is to âBF exclusively for 6 months for a healthy life of a babyâ. After 6 month the baby can be introduced to semi-solids.
With The Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill that has been approved its jackpot for women that the paid Maternity leave is extended from 3 months to 6 months.
If you have got someone to look after the baby like a full time maid or your mom or mil or a distant relative whom you can trust completely that they can care for your baby in your absence and your baby will co-operate or if your office have Crèche within the compound where infants are allowed then you can join back work.
In most of the cases where mils and moms are working and or very old, our office does not have a Crèche and most day cares start at the age of 9+ months. Then you need a 9 month sabbatical. So minus 6months paid leave your savings should be able to last 3 months + 1 or 2 more.
For the rest of the details about motherhood, pregnancy and parenting we have lots of websites and countless apps on smart phones.
In case of higher studies or to continue studies:
You definitely know the term of your course. Alternatively you could also try for scholarships and stipends.
In case of starting your own Business:
At least for a period of 1 year.
2. How much to save?
Reply: Nobody can say exact amount that will be required .An estimation based upon your lifestyle and inflation. Since everybodyâs lifestyle is different leaving it upto you.
3. How much per month you will be able to save if you start now?
Reply: The answer depends on your lifestyle again.
A suggestion would be:
If you have long time like more than 2 years then atleast 10% of your salary
If you have less than 2 years then 15 to 18% of your salary per month
If itâs an year+ then 25 %
Less than a year then 50 %
⢠Once again lets Google
⢠Recurring deposits are the best
⢠Investing in Mutual funds and shares etc
4. In case of freshers from when can you save?
Reply: Now I donât mean that all Job fresherâs cannot save but people
⢠who have to start repaying education loan
⢠who have landed in jobs with less take away
⢠who have got jobs in Metroâs where cost of living is super high etc etc
Then when can/should you start saving? As soon as your first hike is given.
5. Alternative: What are the talents or hobbies which can earn you money by sitting @ home?
Reply: In case you have failed to save then all those hobbies and talents you learn will earn something for you on some rainy day. Now you might be thinking â Oh Gosh I am not good at anything. I donât have any talentâ. Only I donât believe that cause everyone will have a talent(mostly hidden). You just need to think and believe yourself. Few examples are
⢠You can Google
⢠That swimming classes you took in your childhood might come handy and you could be a couch
⢠You love to do Origami and so do and sell online or approach a nearby shop and ask them to market your stuff
⢠You are good at maths and science then tutor the kids in your vicinity or give an online class
⢠You can teach a language like English, French or German etc or any local language to non-local
⢠etc etc
Agenda:
This write up is not a complete solution on how to save and what to do.
My agenda is to sow an idea in every oneâs mind that you need to save a little for which you need to have a planning or you will fall prey for your credit cards and end up paying a lot which we all know by now.
While everyone are my target audience my special targets are women so they can have a peaceful pregnancy and post natal time. Happy Mothers day Folks.
Thanks and Regards
