Assam is literally a “silk country” where silk culture is rooted in the rural life and culture of Assamese people. This is the only state in India and the world where Muga silk is grown. Sericulture of Assam comprises of mulberry (pat), Eri silk and Muga silk. India’s 98% production of Eri silk is produced in and around Assam. 100% of India’s Muga silk production is originated in Assam and hence Assam silk occupies a unique position in the sericulture map of the world. Sericulture has been an effective means for generating gainful employment in rural Assam and it has enormous potential in the context of building the rural economy of this region.
Ornamental designs on the mekhela-chadors are traditionally woven, never printed. Sometimes a woven pattern, called the pari is stitched along the sides of a chador, or along the bottom of a mekhela.

Batik is a process of decorating cloth by covering a part of it with a coat of wax and then dyeing the cloth. The waxed areas keep their original color and when the wax is removed the contrast between the dyed and undyed areas gives the pattern. One of the significant features of this art is that it is very simple and can be done by anyone.
The history of Indian batik can be traced as far back as 2000 years. Indians knew resist method of printing designs on cotton fabrics long before any other country had even tried it. Indian cotton and dyes were very popular. The indigo blue was one of the earliest dyes to be used. The elaborate process of dyeing and waxing was one of the hitch that caused the art to decline.

Jute is a recyclable and eco-friendly vegetable fibre grown majorly in India and Bangladesh. It is soft fibre that turns rough when spun into threads. It is the most affordable and cheapest vegetable fibre for weaving textiles after cotton. Jute sarees are found in all parts of India but the ones with beautiful traditional hand work are made in Varanasi. Jute has a moisture absorbing ability which makes it cool, breezy and irritation free while makes it an ideal apparel for summer. Jute sarees are still in vogue in the 21st century among modern Indian women who generally wear them at marriage functions and even at various festivals.
