We dropped a ceramic mug onto a tile floor. Then we dropped an agri-fibre bio-composite mug from
the same height. One shattered. One bounced.😌✨
That gap — between the intuitive sustainability choice and the real-world performance — is what we
wanted to talk about.
The Fragility Tax: ceramic breaks at roughly 20% per year in shared office pantries. Each replacement
cycle re-incurs the original manufacturing carbon footprint. The carbon maths on ceramic are worse
than they look.💔
The ragpicker reality: broken ceramic and glass fragments are a leading cause of hand injuries among
India’s four million informal waste workers. When we choose fragile materials, we transfer a human cost
to people we never meet.
We rated nine sustainable cup alternatives across six parameters. Agri-fibre bio-composite scored 25 out
of 30 — the highest on the list. It is also mechanically recyclable: grind it, remould it, give it a second life
in non-food-contact applications. Not a perfect closed loop, but circular.
No perfect answer exists. But some answers are meaningfully better than others.✅
