We dropped a ceramic mug onto a tile floor. Then we dropped an agri-fibre bio-composite mug from
the same height. One shattered. One bounced.😌✨

That gap — between the intuitive sustainability choice and the real-world performance — is what we
wanted to talk about.

The Fragility Tax: ceramic breaks at roughly 20% per year in shared office pantries. Each replacement
cycle re-incurs the original manufacturing carbon footprint. The carbon maths on ceramic are worse
than they look.💔

The ragpicker reality: broken ceramic and glass fragments are a leading cause of hand injuries among
India’s four million informal waste workers. When we choose fragile materials, we transfer a human cost
to people we never meet.

We rated nine sustainable cup alternatives across six parameters. Agri-fibre bio-composite scored 25 out
of 30 — the highest on the list. It is also mechanically recyclable: grind it, remould it, give it a second life
in non-food-contact applications. Not a perfect closed loop, but circular.

No perfect answer exists. But some answers are meaningfully better than others.✅

Between 30 and 45 percent rice husk fibre. A food-grade binder. A small amount of compatibilizer.
That is the entire composition of a HuskMade bio-composite cup.🌾☕️✨

The rice husk is the hard outer shell removed from paddy at Indian rice mills. 22 million tonnes
generated annually. Most of it burned or dumped.
Combine it with a food-grade binder at 200°C in an injection mould. Out comes a mug that does not
break, does not stain, and does not leach — the binder is FDA-approved, BPA-free, and IS 10910
compliant for food contact.✅

The leaching concern is real — but it applies to PVC, polystyrene, and polycarbonate. Not to food-grade
bio-composite binders. These are different materials.
The carbon math: roughly 65% lower footprint than equivalent ceramic, because injection moulding
runs at six times lower temperature than a ceramic kiln.

End of life: mechanically recyclable through grinding and remoulding, properties holding for
approximately five cycles. Second life in non-food-contact applications. Not biodegradable in landfill —
and recyclable and biodegradable are different things.

It took three weeks of awkward to make the reusable cup automatic✅.

Here is what a Bangalore professional’s day actually looks like once it works .

• 7 AM chai stall on 17th Cross. The vendor pours into your cup without being asked.

8:30 AM Cubbon Park walk. Same cup, tender coconut water this time.

• 10:30 AM office vending machine. Remove the auto-dispensed paper cup, put yours under the spout.

• 1 PM canteen filter coffee takeaway. Cup intercepts the disposable.

• 4 PM meeting tea. Pour from the tray into your cup before the chai gets to your seat.

• 7 PM Swiggy late-shift coffee. Decant immediately, discard the paper, work continues.

• Weekend at an Indiranagar café. BYO. The barista nods.

Seven uses, one cup. About 1,500 disposables not used in a year .

There are two fires burning in Indian agriculture. We only talk about one‼️.

Every October, Punjab and Haryana torch paddy straw — and Delhi’s air collapses. That fire has news
cameras.

The other fire happens year-round, behind rice mills across the country. About 22 million tonnes of rice
husk generated in India every year. Most of it burned at mill yards or open-dumped. No headlines.
Stubble and husk are different waste streams. Same root cause — agricultural residue with no
commercial market.

Take rice husk, fuse it with a food-grade polymer, mould it at low temperature. You get a cup that uses
23 grams of waste, lasts thousands of uses, and helps end the economics of burning✅.
Markets end the burn. Not bans🚫.

Chaos? Maybe.
But even after the drop, the TurtleTales mug still steals the spotlight. ☕✨🐾

Because good mugs survive messy mornings, playful paws, and a little bit of madness. 🤎

8,00,000 disposable cups left a single Bengaluru office building last year. Nobody counted them.

Until 2026, nobody had to.

From financial year 2025-26, India's top 1,000 listed companies have to disclose value-chain emissions under BRSR Scope 3. Office consumables — disposable cups, lids, sleeves — sit inside Category 1. They have to be counted now.
For a 2,000-person office, the annual numbers look like this:
8 lakh cups. ₹12.4 lakhs in fragmented spend. 12 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions.

Three numbers that need to appear on next year's filing.
