Studio Centered-made by hand

Studio Centered-made by hand I began tinkering with clay, fabric and yarn a little over a year ago and since then I have continued to explore different techniques. Chitra

At the wheel, I work with terracotta and stoneware and with the needle its cross stitch on linen and aida.

‘made by hand’ is the theme I go by at my studio. Its exciting with all the colors of the clay, the glaze, the yarn and fabric – it makes me truly happy and ‘centers’ me and that’s why the name – Studio Centered

I’d love to hear what you think. Let's chat if you’d like to buy any of the pi

eces or want it customized. I’ll need 2-3 weeks to deliver pieces in ceramics and 2 months for the embroidered ones. For now, I am selling in Bangalore alone.

My vault of inspiration rests in the homes I grew up in, our kitchen and all the delicious experiments, the books I read (more like flipped pages 😊 I started to enjoy reading only at 9 or 10) and the neighbourhood stores around where I lived, to name a few. I vividly remember the colours, aromas and places from those days. Today, when I sit in my studio thinking about projects, these are the images and memories I draw on.
I am sharing one tiny piece of my childhood with you. Growing up in South Bangalore, I was a short walk away from some of the most interesting neighbourhood stores. The ones I really enjoyed were the stationery and the bookstores. Beautifully illustrated books and stickers always caught my fancy. The rich colours and the illustrations were so captivating that I would spend hours looking at them. I often tried to copy those drawings, you see in my head, I was this super talented artist 😊 I will spare you my doodles, but here are some of the illustrations from some of my favourite books 😊

Very happy to introduce Sandhya Byataraya, a friend and a talented artist (check out her work ). Having completed her year-long residency in Arita, Japan, she has joined Studio Centered as a maker and teacher. We met a little over a year ago and discovered our shared interests in music, languages, and, of course, pottery.
We are makers at heart, and over the last couple of weeks, we have been working together on a collection of limited-edition pieces that excite us. We are looking forward to sharing that with you.

Sorting through pictures on an old phone, I found this picture. This terracotta bowl was one of the first pieces I made on the wheel...the one that survived the firing 😊

Walking into my first pottery workshop was sheer serendipity. I was curious about pottery but wasn't sure if I would have the time to pursue it even as a hobby. As the workshop drew to a close, I fell in love with the process and often turned to the potter's wheel to clear my head or have fun. Soon, it turned into a full-time pursuit; a crafts corner at home turned into a full-fledged studio. I set up Studio Centered in October of 2018. After a long break during COVID, I resurfaced in 2023. More on my entrepreneurial journey in the following posts.

Love and sunshine 😊
