Pashmina has a long history, with mentions appearing as early as the 3rd century BC. The craft of weaving the wool into fine shawls is believed to have been established in the Kashmir Valley, with 15th-century ruler Zain-ul-Abidin instrumental in founding the industry by introducing weavers from Central Asia. Historically, Pashmina was a luxury item, worn by royalty and aristocracy, and has long been used as a status symbol and part of a dowry. It gained significant popularity in Europe through trade, especially after Empress Joséphine, Napoleon Bonaparte's wife, embraced it in the 19th century.

Pashmina wool comes from the Changthangi goat of Ladakh, but its history in Kashmir is rooted in a 15th-century visit by the Sufi saint Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani. He was gifted socks made from the wool and presented them to the Sultan of Kashmir, Sultan Kutabdin, who then encouraged the development of a shawl-weaving industry in the valley. To do this, he invited skilled artisans from Central Asia and Persia to teach their techniques to local weavers.
