One last post...
On Friday, after almost 36 years, we closed the door of The Treasury for the last time.
Started by Martin Kennedy in 1988 and then owned by PJ & Lena McGrath, The Treasury became a well known destination for all things school. For the last 8 years we have simply been guardians of The Treasury & the great business the Kennedys & Mcgraths built up.
The Treasury wasn’t just a shop, it was a tradition.
A tradition of a visit to the shop when you started school, continuing through to leaving cert and college. A tradition of bringing your kids for their school supplies and then your grandkids. A tradition you had when you were a child that continued with your own kids. For others the tradition continued into their career as teachers. When The Treasury went online as School Books Ireland, the tradition went nationwide and the process of ordering online every year became a tradition for many families annually, waiting on their package to come through the door.
The tradition of getting new books, new stationery and a new bag. The fresh smell of new books signifying the start of the new school year. The excitement of new pens or a fresh notebook. It was a tradition that spanned many generations. We are so sad we can not continue this tradition for future generations but we are so thankful to have been a part of this journey for so many. We will miss seeing the excitement of kids starting school, the nerves and anticipations. We will miss hearing their stories. It was an honour to see so many kids grow over the years.
The Treasury has always been a family business and behind every family business is a great extended family. We were so lucky to have the best family behind us. Three generations of our family worked in The Treasury and helped over the last 8 years, some paid and some not paid! we are so grateful to them all. A successful business is nothing without its staff and we were blessed with the best. We can safely say every staff member became a part of our family. We often said our Treas family was our second family. Mary, our main stay has been by our side for the last 8 years. If you ever ordered online from us it was more than likely that Mary, packed and checked your order with attention and care. If you were lucky enough to be served by Mary in the shop you will know you were always greeted with a smile and a friendly word, willing to help and go above and beyond. Our crew of summer staff, they all worked so hard every year to provide the service The Treasury was known for. We couldn’t have done it without them all and thank them all dearly for their hard work and the fun they brought every summer.
We have been blown away by the overwhelming support we have received since we announced our closure. Thank you to every single person, who phoned, commented, liked, shared, sent cards, messages, cakes, flowers or called in. Your words of support and well wishes brought us great comfort. Thank you to everyone who visited the shop to have one last visit for old times sake. Thank you to the many people who brought the kids starting school in September, for their first school shop so they had a Treasury start to their school journey. Thank you to everyone who came for back to school supplies for next year, it makes us happy to think we will still be a part of the return to school in September. Thank you to everyone who shared their memories and stories of the shop with us. Thank you to everyone who ordered on our website from all across the country and Thank you to everyone who supported our closing down sale. From the bottom of our hearts, we can not thank you enough and we appreciate it all.
It has been our greatest honour to be owners of School Books Ireland & The Treasury for the last 8 years. We have loved being a part of the business community of New Ross and thank all our wonderful neighbours & traders for their support & advice over the years. We are so so grateful for all the memories it gave us and all the wonderful people we met along the way. The suppliers & delivery drivers who became more than acquaintances, the work experience students who became staff, staff who became family, family who became staff!, and customers who became friends❤️
Thank you to everyone who has supported us in any way since 2016. We are so sorry we can not continue the great legacy and we are absolutely heartbroken to say goodbye.
We are going to miss it so much.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
And remember please support your local businesses.
John, Barbara & Ciara ❤️
