Did you know...

Cottages traditionally had thatched roofs, thick straw piled high, with no wood panelling underneath. In cold weather it was one of the only places for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained, it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off and through the roof. Hence the saying "IT'S RAINING CATS AND DOGS"

Back in the day baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water.
The man of the house had the privilege of bathing first in the the nice clean water, then all the sons, then the women and finally the children.
Last of all the babies and by then the water was so dirty you you couldn't fully see through it!
Hence the saying
"DON'T THROW OUT THE BABY WITH THE BATH WATER!"

In 1500s a lot of people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May and they still smelled pretty good by June.
However, since they were starting to smell brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odour.
Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married!

Urine was once used to tan animal skins, so families used to all p*e in a pot and then once a day it was taken and sold to the tanneries.
If you had to do this to survive you were "P**S POOR" but worse than that if you couldn’t even afford to buy a pot then you "DIDN'T HAVE A POT TO P**S IN".

There was a pub Marble Arch, London which used to have some gallows adjacent to it.
Prisoners were taken to the gallows to be hanged and on their their way, outside the pub the prisoners were asked would they like "ONE LAST DRINK".
If they said YES, it was referred to as ONE FOR THE ROAD.
If he declined, that prisoner was ON THE WAGON.
