Homeschooling can feel overwhelming--but it doesn't have to be!

When you start homeschooling, history can feel like one of the hardest subjects to “get right.” There’s so much to cover, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking you need lots of textbooks, all the timelines and every singe living book. Ever written.. But it doesn’t have to be comp...

Saint Brigid of Ireland
By Alice Curtayne (of Tralee, Co. Kerry)

St. Brigid, who ranks with Patrick and Columcille in Ireland's Great Triad of Saints, arose in that period where certainty begins in our record. She stands in that first shaft of light that illuminates our history, literature, topography, art and architecture. The strength of Irish devotion to her is expressed in the very repetition of our Kilbrides, Templebreedys, Tobarbrides, Kilbreedys, Rathbrides and Drumbrides. No one having the slightest acquaintance with Ireland can miss her name, so hugely is it scrawled across the landscape. The ancients affixed it to enduring things, like running water and glens, that should witness to her forever. . . Her contemporaries re-named the landmarks, recast the whole topography of the Island, in order that she should be remembered.

An excerpt from Priscilla McCaffrey's beautiful tale of Christmas in China, "Christmas Blossoms":

"Jian thought of his mother and his venerable father greeting the priests at the door after Midnight Mass. On thiose nights, the priests carried lanters and sang Western carols outside the Zhang home, and they would not be let in until they sang the Chinese version of 'Jingle Bells.' . . .

When he turned to thoughts of his family, it was always Christmas Eve. His family meant Christmas to him, and Christmas meant his family."

"Jesus a Prisoner in the Womb of Mary"

An excerpt from "The Road to Bethlehem: Daily Meditations for Advent and Christmas":

"Consider the painful life that Jesus Christ led in the womb of His Mother, and the long-confined and dark imprisonment that He suffered there for nine months. Other infants are indeed in the same state; but they do not feel the miseries of it, because they do not know them. But Jesus knew them well, because from the first moment of HIs life, He had the perfect use of reason. He had His sense, but He could not use them; eyes, but He could not see; a tongue, but He could not speak; hands, but He could not stretch them out; feet, but He could not walk--so that for nine months He had to remain in the womb of Mary like a dead man shut up in the tomb: I am become as a man without help, free among the dead (Psalms 87:5-6)."

In November, we celebrate the traditional three days of All Hallow's Eve, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day—the perfect time to reflect on the Communion of Saints. These observances invite us to contemplate the connection between the Church Militant (those of us living on Earth), the Church Triumphant (the Saints in Heaven) and the Church Suffering (the souls in Purgatory).

This time of year invites us to consider the Four Last Things: Death, Judgement, Heaven and Hell. As we pray for the souls of the faithful departed and celebrate the lives of all the Saints in Heaven--we are reminded of our own death and judgement.
