The Claddagh ring was created by Richard Joyce, a Galway native who was caaptured by algerian pirates whilst on a trip to the West Indies. He was sold as a slave to a goldsmith who trained him in the art of metal working. Released sometime around 1690, he returned to Galway where he created the Claddagh ring. Earliest examples of the ring date back to the 1700's.
The ring symbolizes love (the heart), friendship (the hands) and loyalty (the crown). Traditionally the ring can be worn three different ways. When worn on the right hand with the heart facing out, the wearer is searching for love. When worn on the right hand with the heart facing in, there are possibilities. And when worn on the left hand with the heart facing in, the wearer's heart is promised forever. The ring is usually given as a sign of love and friendship.
