The Spanish Armada is one of history’s great tales. In May 1588 the greatest battle fleet that Europe had seen set out from the mouth of the Tagus to conquer England.

After the disastrous encounter with the English fleet, some of the ships sought shelter on the western coast of Ireland whose ragged and rocky coastline became the graveyard of almost one quarter of the Spanish fleet. Most of the Spaniards who were shipwrecked in Ireland were surrendered by the Irish to the English authorities, who later executed them.

The Spanish Armada is a knife edge moment of history, had Spain thoroughly defeated England in the 16th century, it is almost impossible to extrapolate what Europe, and the world would look like today as a result.

Niall Fallon's book "The Armada in Ireland" is the result of exhaustive research, where every wreck site has been visited, contemporary sources used, archaeological evidence drawn from, and interviews with locals regarding the Armada to illuminate the oral histories passed from generation to generation.

We have a hardback copy for sale here on the Charlie Byrne Website for €25: https://charliebyrne.ie/product/the-armada/

We are really looking forward to launching ‘Ethnology: A Love Song for Connemara’ a new collection of poems, by Cathy Galvin tomorrow, Tuesday 26th May at 6pm.

‘Cathy Galvin’s rich, complex Ethnology: A Love Song for Connemara is a history of Galvin’s mother’s native Mason Island and a tremendous elegy for her son whose heart is buried there’ Martina Evans, Irish Times.
These lyrical poems bring the west of Ireland island life and seashore culture vividly to life and bears witness to a vanishing way of life. Cathy will be in Galway ahead of her appearance at The Listowel Writer’s Festival which is happening this week. Fellow poet Louis De Paor will be in conversation with Cathy tomorrow and all are welcome.

We have a 1st edition 20th printing (it was that popular 😆) of Charles Bukowski's autobiographical novel - Post Office.

Post Office is considered Bukowski's finest work. It tells the story of his time working as a postal cleric in a dead end, soul-crushing job that fuels his gambling and drinking habits. An all too real and very grim story, it became an instant classic of American literature.

In 1969 Black Sparrow Press, who published this edition, along with royalties, offered Bukowski $100 a month every month for live if he quit his job at the post office and come write for them. The offer was taken and three weeks later Bukowski produced this book.

The film rights were bought in the 1970s during the era of New Hollywood; a time when young directors made gritty and pessimistic films such as Taxi Driver and Serpico. However, to this day, no adaptation has been made.

We have one paperback copy for sale for €20 on the Charlie Byrne's Website linked here - https://charliebyrne.ie/product/post-office/

We are delighted to be launching ‘A Sheepdog Named Oscar: Love and Companionship in Rural Ireland’ by Dara Waldron this coming Friday 22nd May at 6pm. The book is a beautiful portrait of the profound love between one man and his dog. Dara rescued Oscar from an abandoned farm in County Clare but found, as he battled grief and alienation, that, in fact, that it may be Oscar who was doing the rescuing. A meditation on on the restorative effect of Irish rural life and the companionship and the power of a loyal sheepdog. Guest speaker on the night is poet and writer, Michael Gorman. All are welcome.

For this week's book of the week, we have a rare bit of memorabilia. A souvenir programme for the official unveiling of the Christy Ring Memorial at Cloyne on the 1st of May 1983 by Jack Lynch.

Considered by many to be the best player that ever graced the game of hurling, Christy Ring defined an era of GAA spanning a career of twenty-four years at the highest level. Although many of his accolades have since been bested (records are made to be broken), Ring was peerless in his time, and very few have had such a dynamic impact upon the game of hurling.

Christy passed away unexpectedly at the age of 58, and with his passing there was great fervor to produce a memorial for this titanic figure. The first of many monuments was the sculpture unveiled by Jack Lynch at Cloyne in County Cork. This commemorative booklet was distributed during the event in honour of his memory.

This six-page booklet is a used copy in very good condition, showing minor signs of wear. We have one copy available for sale on the Charlie Byrne Website for €25 linked here: https://charliebyrne.ie/product/chrsity-ring/

Joyce is possibly the biggest juggernaut in Irish litereature. There are few households that don't have at least one of his works on a bookshelf (even if they only pretend to have read it) ;-)

Far less is known about the Galway born author  Nora Barnacle who was both Joyce's muse and wife. Behind every great man is a great woman, and for those interested learning about this remarkable woman, we have available one signed copy of "Nora Barnacle Joyce – A Portrait".

It is available on the Charlie Byrne webiste in the rare and collectables section for €50 here: https://charliebyrne.ie/product/nora
