This is very sad. Unfortunately VAT is absolutely crippling for small businesses in Ireland. It’s based on turnover, not on profit, so the more responsibly you try to run your business (which is more costly, in terms of quality materials and products) the more you are punished financially, as profit margins are so small. If your profit margin is 20% after costs, but VAT is 23%, Revenue will happily take that 23%, leaving you with -3% for the year. 🫣

It’s happening everywhere. That’s why our towns are full of v**e shops and big chains. Much easier to make a living selling cheap things made abroad with extortionate markups, sadly.

The government could fix this problem and should, before we all disappear. 🫠
