Here and Now – A Novel

Here and Now, a new novel by Frank Flanagan, was a book we were delighted to work on. Lyrically crafted, this work tells the story of a boy growing up in a small town in 1950s Ireland forced to deal with contending friendships and conflicting loyalties and the consequences that follow from our choices.

The cover design of this book was by Carrowmore.ie and features a work called ‘Birds from Momoyogusa – Flowers of a Hundred Generations’ (ca. 1909–1910) by Kamisaka Sekka. The original of this work can be found in the New York Public Library.

The author will be speaking about his work on Mid West Radio on Friday 26 February 2021. This book is distributed by Gill Books and available online from your local bookshop or from wherever you buy your books. An ebook of this title is also available on Kindle.

Man walks into a carwash. He tells the attendant that he would like his car washed and polished. The car is important to him, and he would like great care to be taken.

The attendant looks at the car, tells the man how long it will take and how much it will cost. The man agrees and the attendant begins work.
When the car is finished, the man is very pleased with the job and drives away.

A week later, it rains. The man comes outside and looks at his car. It's wet. It looks a little like it's been washed. It hasn't been properly cleaned by the rain but it looks at first a little like it has.

The man is outraged. He drives back to the carwash. He demands to know how the attendant could charge him for something that the rain could pretty much do for free.

The attendant is saddened and confused. He thinks about how much easier his life would have been if he had trained for years to become a professional freelance cover designer where this kind of thing could never possibly happen.

To celebrate the first signs of summer, we've reduced the ebook price of Getting Published, the essential guide for Irish authors! This is now €2.99 for the next four weeks.

If there was ever anything you needed to know about how to approach a publisher or agent, you'll find it here.

The aim of this guide is to shine a light on the business of book publishing and the occasionally opaque process of getting published. This book has been developed specifically with new writers in mind, to provide an overview of the different routes to publication and answer the most commonly ask...

If an author is asking a reader to spend their time and money on a book, there are few things more damaging than seeing a host of errors in the opening pages. Even when an author has real talent, poor editing may mean that this is never discovered or properly appreciated.

Most writers who get to the point of completing an entire book can write well. They may have been asked to edit or proofread the work of other writers. It is almost impossible, though, to properly edit your own writing as you tend to read what you think should be on the page rather than what's actually there.

We once had the great honour of copyediting a piece of writing by Seamus Heaney, a foreword for a very important book. At this stage, Heaney had already been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature so the prospect was daunting. However, we did find things to correct, and he agreed that they should be changed. At this point in our career, this was the editorial equivalent of being shot into space but it brought home the reality that no author can ever properly edit their own work alone. Books really do need editors.
