Ghost Net headpiece
Sinamay veiling, wire, silk, cotton thread.
This headpiece has sold, definitely one of my favourites from this year. (But plenty of variations still in stock!)
I have been very preoccupied with environmental issues and had been talking about washed up fishing nets with friends and family who walk along the coast where they live. We were despairing over all the rubbish that is choking our seas (not to mention the horrifying numbers of discarded disposable - non-biodegradable - face masks they've come across littering the beaches this year). Our impact on the world is devastating, I constantly rethink what materials I use and what I want to produce with that in mind.

Honoured to have been selected for Create at Brown Thomas in this very special tenth year! Can't quite believe my work is there amongst the incredible designers this year. This clip is taken from their beautiful video, and shows two pieces from my new Ghost Net collection, available in store now.
The full video can be seen at and is well worth a watch.
A huge thank you to .corkery and everyone at Brown Thomas!

New collection Ghost Net launching soon at as featured today in LIFE Magazine

Headpieces handmade using ethically sourced natural sinamay veiling, reflecting on the issue of the discarded fishing nets littering our seas, so detrimental to marine life.

Going back in time to Belfast and the Platform shows, the first time my hats hit the catwalk in 2011! My work has definitely gained a bit more polish since then, but I had a lot of fun with the designs! I can't find any photos but I had used electroluminescent wire to create floating scribbles and to light up under some of the brims, integrating battery packs into the designs. And a mad hatter top hat that was like an opening book, with the spine inscribed by a book binder (where oh where are the photos!!). Met some really talented people at these shows too.
1. Orange/pink metal topped "Hologram" hat.
2. Paper Planes headpiece.
3. "Hairband on steroids" 60s style headpiece, window Sinamay/lurex mix. There were no hat blocks for this style at the time, I blocked it around a big round plant pot that had just the right curve. That make-up!!

Delving back to the very start! These were taken when I was just learning the craft in London in the late noughties, by (the talent behind the amazing photoshoot I posted images from recently) and modelled by Helen Barron. Mel interviewed me recently for her blog, which is linked in her bio.
These were the first two "proper" blocked hats I ever made and also a draped velvet turban that I learned to make by looking at a vintage one and trying to work out how it was done. As far as I can remember, it was bought by a really lovely lady for her aunt, who was in her 80s or 90s at the time, and she had always wanted to own a turban. I was lucky enough to meet this lady again some years later. Apparently her aunt had loved it very much and worn it often. After she passed away, she left it to her neice.

Flashback to 2013, and Belfast Fashion Week at the Ulster Museum. It was a big year, I received ACNI funding to kick-start my digitally printed silk scarves, Cara Delevingne had just worn my lizard headpiece and I was making hats for Dracula Untold, while filling my weekends trying to sell my work at fairs all around the country. I was living with my parents in Tyrone and constantly travelling to see my boyfriend and friends in Dublin and the film work in Belfast.
This collection was called Luna, and featured more traditional hats and silk scarves. I think the photographer was Norman Bell.
1. This was blocked on a vintage puzzle block from Canada that my mum and I restored (areas had been chipped away from years and years of pinnings and the wood had warped).
2. One of my faves, I shaped the felt base around sections of ceramic plant pots and wired and steamed it into the final shape with very burnt fingers before covering in feathers and crystals (many hours in a fume mask!).
3. I beaded each leaf individually and layered for a 3d effect.
4. This big sweeping brim was one of my absolute favourite blocks to use. Saved up for it for ages!
5. One of my "kiss curl" headpieces, I loved cutting and wiring the outline into variations of this shape. This was my fav scarf design too, I layered lots of my imagery inc close up photos I had taken of butterflies.
