WORKSHOP UPDATE.......We are dusting off the secateurs and shaking out our aprons in anticipation of you joining us on our first, post lockdown, workshop. On July 24thwe will host a cut flower gardening workshop.

Would you love to fill your garden with beautiful flowers that are perfect for bringing inside your home? Knowing what to grow where and when? Do you have the right soil? How to choose flowers that will last in the vase once cut. And most importantly how to make those flowers look beautiful once arranged.

This workshop will answer all those questions and more.....

This workshop is ideal for those looking to learn how to grow sustainable cut flowers for themselves in a domestic or urban setting.

Once we've inspired you to grow your own, you'll learn how to pick and condition and prepare your flowers.
We'll then demonstrate a natural summer inspired vase arrangement that you'll be able to recreate when your garden is blooming with stunning flowers.

The workshop fee includes all flowers, foliage and materials including a recycled glass vase for your bouquet. Nibbles and refreshments provided

Good morning everyone,

We hope that you are all enjoying the lovely spring sunshine this morning.

We are stepping ever closer to being able to host our in person workshops just waiting to get the go ahead for dates!! We will be hosting our ever popular spiral bouquet workshop this summer 🤞🏻 but today we wanted to share with you a different style of bouquet.

This bouquet is primarily front facing and is all about placement, shape and form.

Unlike a spiral bouquet there is little foliage as it's base and it relies on bold shapes and angles. It doesn't use as many 'traditional' flowers and blends exotics with garden flowers.

It features 3 different Anthuriums which have become a real 'Instagram ' flower and definitely divide opinion! We love them for the drama they add to our designs.

For this bouquet we kept the colour palette to a fresh green, white , lemon with a splash of pink but this style can work well with bright contrasting colours too.

This shape of bouquet in a smaller form is increasingly popular with brides who are looking for something different to a round posy style bouquet.

At the bottom of the design is a large glossy monstera leaf for added impact.

Hi folks, there’s lots of talk about sustainability within businesses at the moment and so we thought we'd let you know all our efforts to be as environmentally conscious as possible. We want to incorporate and embrace green wherever we can. We might only make a small difference but hopefully all our small changes add up!

Gift bouquets can be heavy on packaging to ensure it reaches the recipient in tip top condition. We’re often brainstorming on how we can reduce what we use – all suggestions welcome!
So where possible we use cellophane, tissue paper & gift boxes that can be can all be recycled ♻️ Our weekly bunches and market bunches are wrapped simply in brown paper and eco paper tape so they can be easily recycled once the flowers are in water. We also offer bouquets in recycled glass vases that can returned and refilled or reused.

At The Total Flower School, we teach our students how to make wreaths and arrangements without the need for floral foam, which has many environmental impacts. We also champion seasonal blooms, growing their own or supporting local flower farmers🌷

Wherever possible and when the seasons allow, we endeavour to use Irish grown flowers and foliage. We are conscious of our airmiles when sourcing our flowers and use European flower farmers that have committed to increasing sustainable practices.

Fresh flowers require lots of clean fresh water, we don't add any preservatives or flower food to our water, so all our waste water is collected and used in our garden.Same goes for our composted green waste.

There is always more to do to, and it can feel like a mountain to climb, but won’t it be great if one day we reach the summit!

Morning All, today we want to tell you about the stunning beauty that is the Magnolia tree.

These striking trees come from an ancient genus. Fossilised specimens have been dated back as far as an extraordinary 20 million years!!

Magnolias are defined by their spring blossom. Their wide-open flower shape come from being pollinated by beetles, as magnolias pre-date the evolution of honey bees.

There are many different varieties of Magnolia to suit every garden and some of the more compact varieties can be grown in a container.

The key to a healthy Magnolia with lots of flowers, is to grow them in full sun in and ensure they never dry out- including those planted in the ground.

Note that newly planted trees can take several years to settle before starting into flower and that excessive pruning can also delay flowering.

Magnolias are wonderful to use in an arrangement and bring into your home because of their fabulous architectural shape and fragrance.

Their beauty is often fleeting - so to maximise their lasting cut the stem when the first petal of the magnolia bud begins to loosen and unfurl. Do this very early in the morning or late in the evening when blooms are full of water. Leave in water for at least a couple of hours before using in your design.

There are lots of different varieties so happy spotting when you're out on your walks 🔎

Here’s a little moody stilllife composition for you all. The flower arrangement is made using the super arandelle mara dark red hellobores, fritilaria meleagris and blossom all from the cutting garden. And it all sits in a beautiful antique silver rose bowl given to me by my fabulous morher-in-law , Peg, who by the way is 89 years young and a super plantswoman.
