It might not feel like the growing season at the moment (did we revert back to winter 🄶??), but this is a great time to sow seeds!

Not all seeds, and maybe wait for a nicer day, but there are still plenty of vegetables you can grow from seed this year. There’s something truly magical about growing your own food, even if it’s just a head of lettuce for salad or some sweet peas šŸ«›

Here are a few you can still sow this year:

🄬 Salad leaves: lettuce, rocket, and spinach can all be sown directly into an outdoor pot or bed
šŸ«› Beans and peas can also be sown directly into their outdoor home in early June (runner beans and sweet peas are so easy to grow, they’re a great place to start)
šŸ„• Certain root vegetables like carrots and beetroot are also ideal to get started now
🄦 Sprouting broccoli and kale can also be sown now as they’ll grow in colder weather
šŸŽƒ Get your pumpkins, courgettes, and squashes planted ASAP for an autumn harvest!

We have a great selection of seeds from at the front of the shop, so have a browse next time you’re in.

*please note I am a very amateur gardener so there may be lots I’ve missed. Please share any ideas in the comments!

Looking for a refreshing, non alcoholic drink to enjoy in the hot weather? Why not try some cold brew tea!

Simply put the tea in cold water and leave in the fridge for at least 4 hours, but preferably overnight. You only need 1tsp per cup of tea. Sweeten with a liquid sweetener (if needed! We didn’t find it was necessary at all), and then pour over ice and enjoy!

We’ve used South of France from . It’s naturally sweet with the dried raisins, elderberries, blackcurrants, and blueberries, and the hibiscus makes it a lovely red colour. We also love Country Garden for a cold brew tea!

In all honesty, I’m trying to be positive here but most tea bags are made with PLA polymers, which mean they are breaking down into microscopic plastic particles.

Aside from the fact that no one wants a cup of microplastics, the packaging waste is also excessive. 5 separate pieces of waste for one cuppa? That’s 5 pieces too much.

Grab some loose leaf tea to try next time you’re in! We have a wide range of delicious teas from , so you’re bound to find one you like… no microplastic in sight. Ask the team next time you’re in, we’ll be more than happy to recommend a tea to try!

As a refill shop owner, the 3 things I would change to live more sustainably:

1. Laundry liquid: bring your empty bottle in and refill it with laundry liquid. You’ll save a bottle, and you’ll be using a product that’s better for you AND for the planet šŸŒ

2. We LOVE cellulose sponges. Standard sponges are made of plastic, and shed microplastics when you use them- they end up on your dishes and cutlery, and wash down the sink. Cellulose sponges are an easy, plastic free swap!

3. Treats! The packaging on sweets and treats from supermarkets is so cheap and flimsy, it’s the epitome of ā€œsingle useā€. Rather than buy a handful of smarties in plastic packaging (and support Nestle), get a BIG paper bag full of an equally delicious, vegan version from us and support another small business ()

What’s your favourite sustainable swap?

Have you ever wondered how we calculate the amount of plastic we avoid/save? Pictured are a few very easy products to demonstrate.

A few notes on packaging:

1. Our personal care fills from , cleaning product refills from , and coffees from and are all delivered in reusable containers. We send them back for refill every time, meaning there’s absolutely no waste!

2. The bulk oat bag pictured is completely made of paper- there’s no plastic layer on the inside, and no printing containing plastic making it both recyclable and compostable! Also, aside from avoiding packaging waste, our customers can buy as little or as much as they want, which saves food waste as well! We often have customers who live on their own buy just what they need for the week, rather than buying a large bag and having it sit in their cupboard for ages.

3. Some tea bags have plastic in them, some don’t. But regardless of the plastic content, there’s a LOT of packaging involved in one single cup of tea. Even the brands with the least packaging still have a plastic wrapped box and a lot of individual teabags. The worst brands have a plastic wrapped box, a pouch for every bag, a string, a tag, and the bag itself. Avoid all of the above, while getting a way nicer cuppa, by getting one of our bulk teas from
