The 6th of January in Ireland is known as Nollaig na mBan and celebrates women’s contribution to Christmas. It is sometimes referred to as Women’s Christmas or Little Christmas. It is a day when the enormous efforts of women over the festive season are acknowledged.
It’s a day of rest and a day of sisterhood, a day to think of all the wonderful women in our circle, and all the strong, amazing women who came before us.
To all you amazing women out there, take a moment to revel in just how wonderful you are, how strong you are. We see you and welcome you in our sisterhood. Take a little break, pour yourself something comforting, and head over to our blog to read about Nollaig na mBan: https://www.croieire.ie/post/the-twelfth-day-of-christmas-celebrates-na-mna

Whew what a year it’s been! Here’s to 2022, may it treat us with kindness and bring hope. Let’s all agree to make the world a little better next year, deal?
And remember: according to old Irish tradition, make sure the first person through the door in the New Year is a dark haired man - this is said to guarantee luck and good fortune for the year. At this stage, we’ll try anything! #2022

It all feels very doom and gloom here in Ireland right now. As Winter Solstice is upon us we are reminded that this is a time for rest and reflection, to slow down and go inwards. Remember that light always follows darkness. The days will begin to brighten from tomorrow. Thousands of years ago our ancestors also knew this and built Newgrange (Síd in Broga) to capture the return of the light, where on Winter Solstice the rising sun shines directly into the chamber illuminating it out of darkness. Remember, the sun always rises.

You can watch a live stream of the sun rising and illuminating the chamber today, Tuesday - Solstice - and again tomorrow Wednesday on the website of the OPW. The broadcast will begin at 8am.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, but particularly our American friends and family. As you ponder today what you are thankful for, take a few moments to read our new blog post where you will see how one family's small step altered the course of history. We are thankful for our Irish diaspora and the wonderful communities they build wherever they go.

The story of the Astronaut Michael Collins' ancestors and how their small step contributed to history many generations later.
