Crowleys Music

Crowleys Music We are an online music shop selling handmade and second-hand instruments, luthier supplies and spare Tadhg Crowley founded the business in 1923.
(421)

Crowley's history in the music industry has spanned nearly 100 years of trading and supporting musicians. He was a pipe major, composer and instrument maker. His instruments were shipped all around the world and he famously restored a set of uilleann pipes for Henry Ford (which are on display in the Ford museum in Michigan,
USA). He passed away in 1955 and his only son took over the business at t

he age of 14. Michael Crowley brought the business through the disco and rock era and was renowned for his ability to fix any instrument and also for the time he gave his customers. He famously sold Rory Gallagher the Fender American Strat which has since become the
most iconic guitar in the world. Michael had traditional values and loved dealing with the customers directly and resisted the
need for a website, insisting that everybody should feel the instrument they are going to buy. What he loved more than anything was finding the perfect instrument for every individual. Michael passed away in 2010. His daughter Sheena ran the company for the next three years doing everything possible to try to save the business but unfortunately was forced to liquidate in August 2013. On Michael’s 10th anniversary (6th August 2020) Sheena relaunched the business under the name ‘The Island Of Music’. The mission is to create a circular economy for musicians and support them in any way possible, act as a singular platform for the instrument makers of Ireland and support and encourage student musicians. We will sell the makers instruments on commission and we will source second-hand instruments to reduce the dependency on instruments from China and Asia. We will source, buy, trade, loan, promote. We have a YouTube channel from the Crowley’s days and we will be doing promotions, workshops, interviews, and performances with the makers and musicians, so please subscribe to stay up to date. We will have an onsite blog which you can be a part of if you create a membership. Those of you who are non-makers or non-musicians can become a patron to support your community of musicians. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCb4HYJ-awmhiUZ3jLa760Yg?view_as=subscriber&fbclid=IwAR2LfVtGuT_slqqcat5eyzaY5KiRQv5P1d_WV1Fbu04LqVvUqhY3_a3dsmk

Mick Power set up Tres hombres 31 years ago to honour Rory Gallagher. He is so respectful and kind in his approach to this. He makes room for everybody and happily invited the young fellas on stage last Sunday in the park. He has a great band and he has managed to keep the same sound. He is a brilliant guitarist, and in how much he holds back he is brilliant too.
Here he is with Brian Tambling who has become a good friend of his since they played together in the City Hall gig we put on in 2024.

In the meantime I just want to share the lyrics of this song by a musician called Joe from Kerry. This is very good. It conjures up fantastic memories. Thanks so much for sharing Joe.

“McCurtain Street Dreams”
Down on McCurtain Street on a rainy Saturday,
Me and my brother with our noses to the glass,
Dad would smile and let us wander,
Through the hum and the dust and the brass.
Old guitars hanging like church bells,
Drum skins shining in the Cork city light,
Every amp was a promise waiting,
Every string said “you could fly tonight.”

Chorus
Oh the magic lives on in those hallways still,
In the crackle of valves and the window chill,
Where Rory’s shadow walks the floorboards slow,
And every young heart learns where dreams can go.
Calling through the years,
Through the laughter and the feedback tears,
Now every weekend when we play,
McCurtain Street still leads the way.
We heard the stories whispered softly,
“Rory stood right here one day...”
Then we saw the old tape rolling,
And the whole room changed in a way words can’t say.
Back in Stiofáin Naofa practice rooms,
Trying hard to make six strings sing,
Playing through Rory’s old PA system,
Man, we thought we were kings.

Chorus
Oh the magic lives on in those hallways still,
In the battered cases and the windowsill,
Where Rory’s spirit burns like gold,
In every young musician brave and bold.
Ringing through the years,
Through the smoke and the blood and cheers,
And every stage we climb today,
Started down Cork city way.
Now the fire keeps on burning,
Though the old shop moved along,
Still carrying the soul that raised us,
Still turning dreams into songs.
And somewhere Rory’s smiling sideways,
At kids staring in through the rain,
Falling in love with loud old guitars,
And chasing that beautiful train.

Chorus
Oh the magic never left that street,
It’s in every backbeat and heartbeat,
From fathers to sons it rolls along,
In every pub and every song.
And when the crowd sings back at night,
Under the red stage light,
I still see two young boys standing there,
Lost in wonder everywhere.

We decided to do this songwriting competition because we are absolutely astounded by the talent of all our customers, near and far. Professional and amateur, and we see it every single day. We wanted to create a situation where we could bring this to the public. We will film the final twenty in the shop if possible and we will live stream the final in the shop on Wednesday the 15th of July.
We have entries from 14yr olds to 74 yr olds. From Ireland, France, and America etc...
If you have a song that hasn't being recorded on an album, and it hasn't been aired on radio just enter it. You'd never know how far it could go. There are two independent judging panels and they are as excited about it as we are.
Don't wait - just do
And best of luck to everyone!!
