The team at Castle Bookshop and Mayo Books Press would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr Michael M. O'Connor on winning the prestigious Nilsson Local Heritage Award at Listowel Writers' Week 2026 for Castlebar Prison & The Bridewells of County Mayo 1835–1935. 🏆📚

This outstanding achievement follows the book's earlier success this year when it received the Contribution to Local History Award at the Mayo County Council Cathaoirleach’s Awards.

Drawing on extensive archival research from Ireland, Britain and the United States, Dr O'Connor's work offers a fascinating and important insight into the history of Castlebar Prison and the bridewells of County Mayo, while illuminating key moments in Irish history and the experiences of those connected with these institutions.

We are delighted to see this important contribution to Mayo's heritage and local history recognised on a national stage. Congratulations, Michael, on this well-deserved honour from all of us at Castle Bookshop and Mayo Books Press.

📖 Castlebar Prison & The Bridewells of County Mayo 1835–1935 is available in-store at Castle Bookshop and online at mayobooks.ie.

Weekend Read! 📚

“John of John” by Douglas Stuart

What happens when you go back home… and realise you no longer fit the life waiting for you? 🌊🏔️

Out of money and searching for direction, John-Calum Macleod returns to the island of Harris- back to the croft, the rhythms of the land, and the people who shaped him. But home isn’t as simple as it once was.

Caught between his deeply traditional father and his fiercely independent grandmother, Cal finds himself navigating identity, faith, and desire in a place where everything feels exposed. As tensions quietly build, the fragile threads of family and community begin to strain… and something has to give.

Tender, raw, and beautifully observed, this new novel from Booker Prize winner Douglas Stuart is a powerful exploration of belonging, expectation, and the cost of being true to yourself. 🌿✨

✨ “Mesmeric, transportive, vividly sensory” — Bernardine Evaristo ✨

Perfect for readers who love emotional storytelling, richly drawn characters, and unforgettable settings that linger long after the final page. 📖💫

Looking for your next gripping read? 📚🕵️‍♀️
An bhfuil tú ag lorg leabhair le léamh?

Ask Aisce about Dirty Laundry by Disha Bose 🧼🔍

Keep your friends close… and your neighbours closer. 👀

Ciara seems to have it all- the loving husband, the beautiful children, the picture-perfect home. But behind the filters, cracks are forming. Mishti feels trapped in a loveless marriage in a country that doesn’t quite feel like home. Lauren’s carefree parenting raises more than a few eyebrows.

Then Ciara is found murdered in her pristine kitchen… and suddenly the neighbourhood group chat isn’t the only thing blowing up. 💥

Secrets. Desire. Betrayal.
Everyone has their dirty laundry- but this goes far beyond gossip.

A deliciously scandalous page-turner that peels back the glossy layers of suburbia to reveal manipulation, obsession, and friendships gone fatally wrong. Twisty, sharp, and impossible to put down. 🩸✨

💬 Aisce says:
“A clever murder mystery that kept me guessing.”
