As Novembers here, it should be safe to start mentioning 🎄🎄CHRISTMAS 🎄🎄

For the Irish, the 8th of December is one of the most popular shopping days of the year, marking the unofficial kick-off of gift giving season. While nowadays many opt to shop online, historically, December 8th was the busiest day in the retail calendar of Ireland's big cities.

The date, significant in Catholic culture as it marks the feast of the Immaculate Conception, the last holy day before Christmas. Schools would close, many employees would have the day off work. Those from rural Ireland “the culchies” would seize the opportunity to travel to cities like Cork, Limerick or Dublin to see the decorations, visit Santa Claus at department stores and do their Christmas shopping.

It's a little different nowadays, of course. International stores can easily be found throughout the country and online shopping has taken over. Commercially driven holidays like Black Friday and Cyber Monday have also led to Christmas shopping starting earlier and earlier.

However, even today many keep the tradition up – enjoying a nostalgic day out – this year we invite you to join us at Irish Crafts for some festive fun!
