Over a period of 1,000 years the county of Westmeath has attracted many writers and commentators. Some of the writers were natives of the county while others came from outside. Collectively the thirty-five writers in the book give a living history and geography of the county at different periods in time. The book also contains a brief biography on each of the travel writers.

Jeremiah Sheehan, a native of Co. Cork, graduated in Agricultural Science from University College, Dublin. He worked for thirty-four years as an agricultural instructor in Co. Westmeath. He was awarded an M.A. in local history by University College, Galway for a thesis on the history of farming and folk lore in Westmeath.
