The wait is over — Volume I of the Guåhan Memory Mail Club — An Islander’s Heart — is live today! Every piece inside was chosen with intention, made with care, and sent with love from this island. A founder letter. An art print postcard. A reflection card. Stamps to carry a little piece of Guåhan wherever you go. And a first edition stamp dated with today’s very special date — my grandfather’s 91st birthday & the official launch of The Guåhan Memory Mail Club! Thank you so much everyone for all of your support & excitement for what’s to come with The Confluent Guam.

Today, June 6th, my grandfather Manuet turns 91! I chose this date to launch the Guåhan Memory Mail Club because of him. When I was working in the mainland I didn’t expect how heavy it would feel. Not just missing the island — but missing my family. Knowing they were so far & feeling so guilty for not being with them. That guilt doesn’t really go away. You just learn to carry it better. When I moved back home something shifted. I started seeing the island differently. Not just as the place I was from, but as something worth documenting. Worth preserving. Worth sending to every islander out there who feels mahålang. That’s what this mail club is. It’s the island, packaged with care, sent directly to you — wherever you are. My grandparents generation endured so much. They survived and rebuilt, and loved the land, sea & community. The least I could do was make sure that story keeps traveling.
When I told him what I was building he said “It’s worth trying.” So we tried. And today it’s real.

If I could go back —just for a moment —I would find her here. In this photograph. Young, before she was mine and I was hers.

I would just want to sit with her. To be near her before the years asked so much of her. Before she gave everything. Before she learned that to be a mother is to spend yourself and call it ordinary.

I would want her to feel that it was all worth it. That the years of giving were received. That we did not waste what she poured out.

We felt it. We carry it. And now we carry her.

We come from women like her. Women who held everything together and made themselves small so that we could feel big.

Before she was anyone’s mother, she was just a beautiful girl on this island full of a life she had not yet lived. Full of us, and she didn’t even know it. We were always coming. She was always waiting. And when we arrived she gave us everything she had been saving without knowing she was saving it.

🌺Happy Mother’s Day to the women of Guåhan🌺—the ones still here and the ones we only know now through photographs.

You are not behind us. You are inside us. May we always honor you.
