🌿 Weedian presents: Trip to Greece 🌿

The Greek heavy and hard rock scene has a much longer and busier history than most people would think. Legendary bands of the 1970s, such as Aphrodite’s Child and Socrates Drank the Conium are proof that psychedelia and rock have been flourishing in Greece for decades. Yet, when it comes to the genre that is nowadays identified as “stoner rock”, the band that is credited for having pioneered it in Greece is Nightstalker. They formed as a heavy rock band in 1989, at a time when the alternative rock scene of Greece was starting to make waves with bands like Honeydive, Deus-X-Machina, The Last Drive and Make Believe in Athens, and Ziggy Was in Thessaloniki, and when the world-renowned metal monsters of Rotting Christ and Septic Flesh were putting out their first albums. With influences that ranged from Black Sabbath and Monster Magnet, to the early dirty sound of the Seattle underground and even the groove of RHCP (just listen to “What your name is” on their classic EP “Side FX” in 1994), Nightstalker were one of the first bands in Europe to record and perform music described today as “stoner rock”. Although the band rejects that label and prefer to call themselves a rock band, there is no doubt that they inspired many bands and laid the foundations of what is known today as the Greek Stoner.

Το Σάββατο 8 Οκτωβρίου, στο Γεωπονικό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών, έγινε πραγματικότητα ένα εγχείρημα ζωτικής σημασίας.
Ο δρόμος, ναι, άνοιξε. Το πρώτο εγχώριο αντιφασιστικό metal φεστιβάλ συστήνεται, έτοιμο να δώσει ένα ηχηρό -και αναγκαίο- μήνυμα αντίστασης και αλληλεγγύης σε μια εποχή η οποία το επιτάσσει.
Μια αυτοοργανωμένη πρωτοβουλία που διαρκώς επεκτείνεται, και στην οποία συμμετέχουν συγκροτήματα, συλλογικότητες, άτομα με κάθε ιδιότητα, για μια συμπεριληπτική συνδιαμόρφωση όλων των προεκτάσεων της μουσικής που αγαπάμε.
Ένας ασφαλής χώρος στον οποίο μπορούμε να συμπαραταχθούμε μετανάστ@, θηλυκότητες, LGBTQI+ άτομα, καθώς και οποιοδήποτε θεωρεί πως η διαφορετικότητα μάς ενδυναμώνει.
Είναι όμως περισσότερα από μια ακόμη metal συναυλία. Είναι ένα διαρκές κάλεσμα, με metal μουσική υπόκρουση, από άτομα που αγαπούν τη σκηνή και την ελευθερία, σε άτομα που θέλουν να ακουστούν και να μην μείνουν αμέτοχα, ενάντια στον φασισμό, τον ρατσισμό και τον σεξισμό, ενάντια στην απάθεια.
Το metal είχε ανέκαθεν ενσωματωμένα στον πυρήνα του τα στοιχεία της εξερεύνησης, της αμφισβήτησης, της δημιουργίας και της εξέλιξης. Έννοιες όπως η κοινότητα και η συλλογικότητα είναι συνυφασμένες με τον ήχο, παρά το γεγονός πως αυτός γίνεται μέχρι και σήμερα, μεταξύ άλλων, πεδίο άνθισης και διάδοσης μισαλλόδοξων αντιλήψεων και αισθητικών που προωθούν ρατσιστικές, ξενοφοβικές, πατριαρχικές και φασιστικές πεποιθήσεις.
Ήρθε λοιπόν η ώρα να δράσουμε, μέσω της μουσικής και όχι μόνο, υπενθυμίζοντας -στους εαυτούς μας πρώτα- πως αυτή η υποκουλτούρα είναι ένα καταφύγιο όπου κανένα δεν πρέπει να εξαιρείται. Πως αυτή η σκηνή μπορεί να υπάρξει χωρίς να διαιωνίζει χρόνιες παθογένειές της.
Η πρώτη συλλογή “Metal Solid@rity” είναι άλλη μια δράση προς αυτό το σκοπό, ένας ακόμη τρόπος ώστε να δείξει η εγχώρια σκηνή την έμπρακτη αλληλεγγύη της.
Κανένα μόνο. Η αλληλεγγύη είναι το όπλο μας.

On the 8th of October, at the Agricultural University of Athens, a project of vital importance took place.
The first ever antifascist metal festival in Greece introduces itself and desires to send a sound message of resistance and solidarity at a time when it is absolutely needed.
A self-organized initiative that is constantly expanding and incorporates bands, collectives, individuals and aims toward an inclusive shaping of our favorite music’s future.
A safe space under which we can stand together with LGBTQ+ people, femmes, immigrants and everyone else that believes difference to be empowering.
It’s also more than yet another metal festival. It’s a persistent calling from people that want to take a stand against racism, sexism, against apathy.
Metal always had at its core the elements of exploration, questioning, defiance, creation and evolution. Notions like community and solidarity are connected with the genre, even though it’s a fact that it has also been a field for entryism and dissemination of hateful perceptions which promote racist, xenophobic, patriarchal and fascist ideologies.
So, it’s time to act through our music, reminding ourselves first and foremost that this subculture is a refuge where nobody should be exempt because of who they are. That this music scene can exist without excusing its historical ailments.
This first digital compilation is another action towards this goal, one more way for the local scene to show its practical solidarity.

Λίγα λόγια για το σχέδιο:
Βασισμένο στις αρχές της τυπογραφίας, ο συνδυασμός κειμενικής πληροφορίας και η διαχείριση της, όπως και η δημιουργία φόρμας, αποτυπώνει την σκέψη πίσω από τον σχεδιασμό. Η αποτύπωση των σχημάτων ανάμεσα στις λέξεις δημιουργεί ένα παζλ κινήσεων και σχέσεων μεταξύ τους ενώ η αναφορά στις ζωές και στις σχέσεις μας, επιτυγχάνεται με την σύνδεση αυτών. Κάθε σχήμα έχει την σημασία του καθώς διακρίνεται η ανθρώπινη ύπαρξη ως κύκλος ενώ το τρίγωνο και οι υπόλοιπες φόρμες όπως το παραλληλόγραμμο μεταφράζουν τις εναλλαγές, αντιφάσεις και εκφράσεις στις ζωές μας. Διαφαίνεται λοιπόν πως το ταξίδι, η αντοχή και οι μεταβάσεις στις ζωές μας, είναι ατέρμονες και συνεχώς εναλλάσσονται και διαπλέκονται, είτε γράμμικα, είτε όχι.
Ως συμπέρασμα οι ανθρώπινες σχέσεις δεν πρέπει να είναι ευκαιριακές αλλά, ουσιαστικές στη βάση τους και πως ακόμα και όταν χρειαστεί ή επιλεχθεί να αλλάξουν πορεία, θα ξανασυναντηθούν.

Few words about the design:
Based on the principles of typography, the combination of textual information and its management, as well as the creation of form, captures the thinking behind the design. The imprinting of shapes between words creates a puzzle of movements and interrelations between them and by connecting them the reference to our lives and relationships is achieved. Each shape has its own meaning as human existence is distinguished as a circle while the triangle and other forms, such as the parallelogram, translate the changes, contradictions and expressions in our lives. Thus, it is clear that the journey, endurance and transitions in our lives are endless and constantly alternate and intertwine, either linearly or not.
In conclusion, human relationships should not be opportunistic but essential at their basis and even when they are required or chosen to change course, they will meet again.

Besides the presentation of bands and albums, you will find exclusive interviews for this book only of famous and rising bands (Ufomammut, Clutch, Naxatras, Orange Goblin, Kylesa, Kadavar, Elder, Stoned Jesus, Acid King, Color Haze, Wo Fat, Gabriele Fiori, Brant Bjork, Nick Olivery…). It is structured in 3 parts:

– a dictionary chapter with, for each group, practical information (origin, date of formation, genre, album and song recommended), the visual of an album as well as a chronicle of a few lines on the group
