Mythiko - Greek Artworks

Mythiko - Greek Artworks Expertised in reproductions and creations, inspired from ancient Greek art and culture. A name and a place that speaks of ancient Greek art. Our Design Filters.

Greek art, clients and expertise are the three pillars on which Mythiko is built. Established in 2010, our original primary objective was to provide fine replicas of the countless exhibits of Greek cultural heritage. The beautiful artworks narrate myths and tell stories about the artists and craftsmen who made them. Greek mythology is an endless source of inspiration for Western art, the “connecti

ng link” between antiquity and Renaissance. MYTHIKO (ΜΥΘΙΚΟ) -the word for mythical in Greek- is inspired by this legacy. We believe that access to beautiful objects is intrinsic to people’s personal and cultural life. Featuring an intriguing product mix, Mythiko aspires to showcase the creative dialogue between ancient Greek art and imaginative design, always taking into consideration our clients, who seek a genuine and an emotional connection with Greek heritage. Throughout the years the business has grown constantly, always maintaining its high-quality and severe selection criteria. POINT OF VIEW
Our point of view is uniquely informed by Mythiko’s devoted relationship to Greek history and art. Since our beginnings our philosophy has been to select each object with utmost care, based on criteria like its beautiness, its aesthetic value and of course, its historical imprint. That may be the the quality texture of a surface, the powerful form of a helmet, the line of a finely made torso, the miniature detail or the draughtsmanship of a vase. Our selection process is that we assess a potential new product against our design filters, a set of four key criteria that we use to ensure every item is a good fit with our view. These are:

– In or related to Mythiko’s Collection. Mythiko is the one shop devoted exclusively to ancient Greek art and carries a curated selection of objects that serves this role. We only offer handmade works in specific versions of colors and materials, dynamically connected with ancient Greece.

– Cultivation. Mythiko shares a commitment to well-designed products, with detailed descriptions. We aim to encourage learning through the various themes, and the development of our knowledge, to enhance the appreciation and enjoyment of Greek history and mythology.

– Artistic Quality. Ancient creators were inspired by the style of their time period and were bound by the materials and techniques available in their regions. Mythiko’s collection of ancient art represents workshops from all around Greek territory. It started with partner designers and handcrafters that were integral to the establishment of ancient Greek art reproduction. All their creations are rooted in craft traditions, where the use of conventional techniques and materials reflects their commitment to authenticity.

– Iconic Variety. It is at the same time a priority of ours to serve all customers and to make Greek art accessible to as wide an audience as possible. Thus we present a collection of more than 1000 pieces in various sizes and prices. Selected museum quality works for the demanding connoisseur, in addition to a variety of beautiful, more modestly priced creations to engage collectors of all levels. Both with the same dedication and the same guarantees. COOPERATION
A principal focus of interest for Mythiko is the survival of traditional techniques, while supporting the craftsmen who use them. Approximately 30 family-owned manufacturers and workshops from all Greek territory, with whom the Shop has nurtured a relationship of mutual trust, support and respect, contribute through their work towards the promotion of Greek artworks. The exquisite museum replicas are the result of such valuable collaborations. The Store aims to accentuate and bridge old crafts with new audiences by putting creations of hard-working and talented artisans in the spotlight which will encourage the preservation of traditional workshops. ATHENIAN METAL CHESS SET 54×54 WITH POWDER BLUE & BRONZE CHESSMEN
WITH CARTON STORAGE BOX AND CHESSMEN SLOTS

Inspiration: Claiming the protection of a promising ancient city, once became the cause of a conflict between Poseidon and Athena. On the hill of Acropolis, in front of the king and the people, Poseidon struck his trident and a huge spring of water was revealed. “You will never lack access to water and you will become rulers of the seas”, he promised. Athena knelt, touched the earth and suddenly a new tree grew. She declared, “The leaves of this tree will never fall. Its fruits will feed you and your children in the centuries to come and its trunk will become a source of warmth and creation.” King Kekropas and the citizens wisely chose food, oil, wood and light, and the goddess as the holy protector of the city, named Athens. (However, Athenians have always honored Poseidon as well, from time immemorial and in this myth we witness a conversion of main religious beliefs in a specific period.)

Chessmen background: The theme of this chess set is inspired by the myth of naming the city of Athens. All pawns are miniatures of real statues. We used as king the large statue of Poseidon of Milos (120BC) from the National Archaeological Museum. As a queen, the bronze statuette (470BC) of “Athena Promachos” that means “Protector”, from the Acropolis Museum. This bronze Hellenistic figurine (300BC) as the bishop, depicts a general – omenoscope, also from the National Archaeological Museum. The knight is inspired by the horseman of stone II, in the British Museum, from the west frieze of the Parthenon (438BC). The “Stele of Aristion” or “Marathon Stele”, “Work of Aristokles”(510BC), is kept in the Archaeological Museum of Athens and inspired the castle. On the front line the pawn is the elite Athenian Hoplite (depicted here with shortsword), from a bronze statuette (540BC) belonging to the Berlin Antiquities Collection in Altes Museum.

A TRIBUTE TO "300"

During the Second Persian Campaign in Greece, the Spartan king Leonidas led a small number of Greek allied forces to narrow pass of Thermopylae (480 BC). At that point, and in order to give the Greek fleet time to prepare, he tried to stop and delay the advance of the Persian army further south. An epic, unequal battle ensued in which he and most of his warriors fell heroically in a dramatic epilogue.

A copy of one of the few surviving tributes from the Alexandrian era to the Acropolis: the youthful head portrait of Alexander himself, created before he ascended the throne of Macedonia, by the sculptor Leocharis, 340 – 330 BC. Acropolis Museum.

A statue of Alexander could have been this votive offering in the sanctuary, the head of which alone was found in the vicinity of the Erechtheion on the Acropolis in 1886. The statue may have been dedicated there during the years following Alexander’s visit to Athens after the pivotal battle of Chaironeia in 339 BC. Conjecture has arisen as to whether it is original work of the late Classical years or a copy from the Roman period. The head radiates intelligence with soulful eyes set deep in their sockets; his hair forms unruly curls with the characteristic off-centre parting and cowlick on the forehead -"anastoli"; the lips are partialy open and the facial complexion is virtually flawless. All these features are distinctive characteristics of Alexander. The head has been compared with copies of works attributed to the sculptor Leochares, such as the Apollo Belvedere in the Vatican, and associated with this sculptor, who created the gold and ivory portrait statues of the Macedonian kings that adorned the Philippeion in Olympia.

ATHENA WITH GORGON SHIELD -50 CM

Athena stands tall, her posture commanding yet graceful, embodying the perfect blend of a warrior and a guardian.
Her left hand presents a shield, a masterpiece within itself, commanding the gaze of all who stand before her. The shield, large and round, is not merely for defense but a canvas showcasing the formidable head of Medusa, the Gorgon. This symbol, placed at the heart of Athena's shield, serves as a ward against evil, its petrifying gaze a reminder of Athena's victory over monstrous foes. Perched on Athena's left shoulder, a symbol of her wisdom, is an owl. Its eyes, wide and observant, reflect the goddess's insight and intelligence, attributes that have made Athena revered not just as a warrior but as a patroness of knowledge and strategy.

This unique embellishment highlights Athena's dominion over both the challenges of warfare and the riddles of wisdom. The figure of Athena, with her spear and shield, the owl of wisdom on her shoulder, and the Sphinx atop her helmet, stands as a testament to the goddess's multifaceted roles. She is not only the patron of heroes but a beacon of intellect and strategy, embodying the ideals that have guided mortals through the ages. This statue, drawing inspiration from the legendary Athena Parthenos, captures the essence of Athena's power, wisdom, and protective grace, inviting all who gaze upon her to remember the virtues that she bestows upon humanity.

MEDIEVAL KNIGHTS CHESS SET 44×44 WITH GOLD/SILVER CHESSMEN

Inspiration: Renaissance had its undoubted protagonists: Knights have been evolved from the iron-masked soldiers of the Middle Ages to the idolized heroes of higher nobility. Through Europe they were named Knights, Sirs, Musketeers or Guardians and were portrayed as the ideal men. With their own code of honor, knighthood‘s ideals of virtue was immortalized in history through Renaissance literature and romance

Chessmen background:The figures are created according to the evolution of the Knight to a noble, elegant guardian and protector, during the renaissance period. In order to become a knight, one had to be trained in hunting and travelling and familiarize themselves with horses and warfare. At the age of 20 they were knighted at a special ceremony during which they were given their swords and had to swear to use them only for sacred and fair purposes.

He is the father of gods and men; a figure to whom all mortals and immortals owe obedience. He is the lord of the elements; he has control over all atmospheric phenomena, the violent winds, as well as the life-giving rain. He is the defender of the social order and the royal power of the rulers. Above all however, he has the one and only weapon of "mass destruction" of his time, the thunder, which he uses against anyone who dares to challenge him.

Take a good look at him; although he was the last of the six children of Cronus and Rhea, yet among the gods it is his own name that stands out and is most familiar to us. As a supreme leader, he also has a supreme abode. Zeus resides in the wonderfully peaceful upper layers above the earth's atmosphere. His thrones are the mountains, but his most famous residence is on Mount Olympus. There he has his palace built by his son Hephaestus, God of fire and blacksmithing.

Inspiration: In and out of the battlefield, archery has been a skill of great demand and appreciation. Apart from hunting, archers were the legendry defenders of the fortress walls of the the city and the ones who offered covering fire during the battle. The twin Gods Apollo and Artemis were masters in archery and protectors of the archers. Philoctetes was one of themost famous archers, who carried the mythical bow of Hercules.

Chessmen background: Fierce , local and international was characterized that period. Their ferocity is symbolized by the agressiveness of the Archer ( Pawn) and the Knight. The posture of the King and Queen indicates their unquestionable leadership. The Bishop reveals his consideration for the imminent battle. Finally the Castle is a reproduction of a pillar which was the basic symbol of the architectural style during that period.
