The Holy Monastery of Platytera

Just a short distance from Corfu Old Town, the historic Monastery of Platytera was founded in 1743 and has been deeply connected with the history of Corfu and the Kapodistrias family. Rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in 1798, it evolved into a vital spiritual and cultural landmark of the island.

Beyond its serene atmosphere and remarkable post-Byzantine icons, the monastery holds profound national significance as the final resting place of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of independent Greece and other historical figures. The Byzantine Museum Antivouniotissa of Corfu – a hidden gem in the Old Town.

Located inside the historic Church of the Virgin Antivouniotissa, the Byzantine Museum of Corfu houses an exceptional collection of Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons, some dating back to the 15th century.

Looking for a cultural break during your stay in Corfu?

Visit the Banknote Museum in the heart of Corfu Old Town, where you can enjoy the beautiful temporary exhibition “Greece, an Iconic Land”, featuring vintage Greek tourism posters from 1929–1976. A wonderful journey through art, travel, and nostalgia. As a graphic designer i was so happy to see them.

Of course don’t miss the museum’s fascinating permanent exhibition, showcasing the history of Greek banknotes and the evolution of currency through the years. (Will make a separate post for this).

Both exhibitions are free to visit, making this a wonderful stop for anyone who loves art, history, and design.
