Every week we unpack something interesting and this week's batch spans Shinkansen history, two of Japan's most recognisable limited expresses, and a 60th anniversary special that will interest anyone following JR West's western corridor operations.
The headline is the Kato 10-2098 E4 Series Shinkansen "Max Toki" 8-Car Set. When JR East relocated the double-decker E4 fleet from the Tohoku Main Line, the Joetsu Shinkansen became its final home. In 2014 the stripe colour changed from yellow to pink, and the P9 formation at the Niigata Shinkansen Rolling Stock Centre gained the crested ibis logo on its flanks, a nod to the Sado Island conservation programme that became quietly bound up with the train's identity in its later years. KATO's 10-2098 reproduces that specific P9 formation with printed livery and logo rather than stickers, and marks the switch to a slotless motor on the E4, which makes a real difference to slow-speed running and consistency across a longer consist. DCC-friendly as standard. If you are building a Joetsu Shinkansen scene or collecting the E4's operational history, this is the formation that represents the final era before withdrawal in 2021. One in stock.
Also just in from the same batch: the 10-2170 E259 Series "Narita Express" in renewed colour reflects a significant change to one of Tokyo's most familiar trains. In 2023 JR East redesigned the E259, removing the aircraft wing markings and N'EX logo from the lead cars. The reason matters: the removal signalled the train's expanded identity beyond airport services, particularly its use on the Sobu Main Line "Shiosai" service from 2024. This is not simply a cosmetic update - it represents a different operational chapter for the E259, and for collectors tracking the prototype accurately it is a distinct version from earlier releases. Based on the Ne005 set from Kamakura Rolling Stock Centre. Slotless motor, close-coupled body-mounted couplers, front connecting door part included for coupling two sets together.
The 10-2142 683 Series 4000 "Thunderbird" (renewed car) basic set reproduces the B35 formation from the Kyoto branch of Suita General Rolling Stock Centre in the post-2015 black and blue colour scheme. The offset collision prevention structures on the end panels are reproduced, the single-arm pantograph is correct for the 4000 series, and destination stickers cover both pre- and post-Hokuriku Shinkansen Tsuruga opening eras, which means this model can represent the Thunderbird at two distinct points in its operational history. Pair with the 10-2149 681 Series add-on set to build the full 12-car formation. Slotless motor, DCC-friendly. Two in stock.
And a collector piece worth knowing about: the 10-2215 Special Projects 287 Series "Kuroshio" 60th Anniversary wrapping 2nd 6-Car Set. The Kuroshio is JR West's limited express on the Hanwa and Kisei lines between Osaka and the Kii Peninsula coast, one of the great scenic routes in western Japan. This special edition marks 60 years of the Kuroshio service with a full commemorative wrap on the 287 Series formation. The 60th anniversary livery is a significant departure from the standard white and blue scheme and a genuine collector's piece. One only.
