Terry Bell Carp Angling …

“Unfortunately within days of catching a big fish last week, the lake, like so many up and down the country, closed for spawning.

I wanted to get another night in before I go to France, so I asked if my other syndicate was open or closed and was told that its down to the members to use common sense but the fish hadn't been spawning recently.

Once I arrived at the lake, I did a full lap to check that I wasn't fishing for spawning fish and once satisfied, I set up in an area I knew.

White bubblegum pop ups went out on naked chods in open water over low w**d with a few scoops of infused crustazia boilies, then the third rod was waded down the margin a few feet and a multirig on a heli system was lowered in with a crustazia wafter and a handful of freebies.

At first light, I got a beep on the margin rod and looking out, it was like a whirlpool bath! They were tearing it up, but no bite materialised. I should have had a bite but something wasn't right.

Maybe the hook was catching something and stopping the rig flying up, or it was in a bit of w**d but it needed to come in.

I wouldn't usually fish a pop up in the margin because in my experience, the fish are a bit more wary close to the bank but it was quite silty and I knew in my gut that I needed to swap the wafter for a pop up. I waited for the fizzing to stop, reeled in and swapped over to a white bubblegum pop up and waded the bait back out with another 8 or 10 infused Crustazia boilies over the top. Around half an hour later a little bit of fizzing reappeared and then the rod was off!

A really good battle ensued, where the carp tried to get into a snag, tree and then some w**d several times but eventually I landed a 23lb 6oz mirror that ws jet black on top and looked absolutely ancient.
It's bottom jaw was almost non existent (maybe from being tethered once) and that made me think- that particular fish would almost certainly only be caught on a pop up because a wafter or bottom bait probably wouldn't fly up into the mouth enough for the hook to catch hold.”
