Good morning it's Friday and the book shop is open till 4pm.

It's not just really old books we stock...
The collective noun for the series of excellent thrillers set in Cumbria about the exploits of Washington Poe and Tilly is a 'body count' - as confirmed by M.W. Craven himself.
We are very happy to say we've added to the body count with the latest title in stock now;

Good Morning welcome to wednesday in Whitehaven - the bookshop is open till 4pm.
Today the Tour of Britain Women's Cycle Race 2026 will start in Cockermouth later flying down Lowther Street and passing the Bookshop just before midday - the streets have been cleared of cars - the roads in places have been fixed - now we wait for the racers who look a little different than they did in the 1860's - which was the first race of its kind; A Ladies Velocipede-Race, Bordeaux 1868.

Good Morning it's Saturday and the bookshop is open till 4pm.
We genuinely never know what might come in to stock from one day to the next.
Today it's a memorial for Alexander Boyle who on 14th June 1861 was washed overboard the Ship "Valdivia"* on her passage from Liverpool to Hong Kong - sadly as such losses at sea were not uncommon we know little else about him or where he was from.
*UPDATE* following some online research by Francis McCrickard [THANK YOU!] the Valdvia is an 1855 Whitehaven built vessell, and Alexander Boyle was from Whitehaven.

Good Morning and welcome to Thursday in sunny Whitehaven - the bookshop is open till 4pm.
The power being off yesterday allowed some of the staff a rare mid-week day off - they took advantage of the weather too and walked round Ennerdale - despite the dry spell it was looking great. One of west Cumbria's many unspoilt gems to visit.
