New Podcast | Cycling Demystified

It was a pleasure to hear Lee Prescott, President of the International Bike Fitting Institute (IBFI), join the team at Cycling Demystified for a thoughtful discussion about the future of bike fitting and the ongoing work to raise professional standards across the industry.

The conversation explores topics including education, certification, evidence-based practice and why bike fitting should be recognised as a profession built on critical thinking, continuous learning and collaboration.

As our understanding of biomechanics, technology and rider interaction continues to evolve, so too must the standards that underpin our profession. Open discussions like these play an important role in sharing knowledge, challenging assumptions and supporting the continued development of bike fitters around the world.

Whether you're an experienced fitter, just beginning your journey, or simply interested in the science behind rider positioning, we hope you'll find the conversation both informative and thought-provoking.

Our thanks to Wei, Matt and Ev for the invitation and for creating a platform that encourages meaningful discussion about the future of bike fitting.

🎧 We'd love to hear your thoughts after you've listened.

For years, cycling shoes have followed a simple philosophy: make them stiff, make them light and make them aerodynamic.

But are we paying enough attention to the one thing they surround... our feet?

It was a pleasure to contribute to the latest feature and Off the Back podcast from , exploring whether the principles behind the barefoot shoe movement could influence the future of cycling footwear.

https://www.cyclingweekly.com/fitness/could-the-barefoot-shoe-movement-ever-come-to-cycling

This isn't about suggesting we should all start riding in barefoot shoes. Cycling places very different demands on the body than walking or running. Instead, it's about asking whether we've become too accepting of cycling shoes that compromise natural foot shape and function in the pursuit of stiffness and performance.

As bike fitters, we see every day how the interface between the foot, the shoe and the pedal can influence comfort, stability, power transfer and even injuries further up the kinetic chain.

It's a fascinating discussion, and one I think will become increasingly important as our understanding of foot function continues to evolve.

Have a listen to the podcast or read the article and let us know your thoughts. We'd be interested to hear where you think the future of cycling footwear lies.

International Bike Fitting Institute Shines at Science and Cycling 2026 Barcelona: Physical Assessment as the Key to Optimal Bike Fit

Barcelona, July 2, 2026 – The International Bike Fitting Institute led a masterclass at Science and Cycling 2026 Barcelona, where physical assessment was highlighted as the cornerstone for achieving a precise and effective bike fit. The session, delivered by biomechanics experts Jon Iriberri and Lee Prescott, emphasized the importance of a holistic approach that combines science, technology, and hands-on practice to optimize cyclist performance and comfort.

During the masterclass, Jon Iriberri stated: “A good bike fit cannot rely solely on mechanical adjustments. The physical assessment of the cyclist—their flexibility, strength, and movement patterns—is essential for customizing the position on the bike and preventing injuries.” Lee Prescott added: “The practical nature of this session allows professionals to immediately apply the knowledge gained, which is crucial at an event like Science and Cycling, held just before the Tour de France’s Grand Départ in Barcelona.”

The congress, which brings together leading experts in sports science and cycling, was the perfect platform to showcase how the International Bike Fitting Institute is making a difference in the preparation of both professional and amateur cyclists, blending scientific rigor with practical applications.

Lee recently had the opportunity to travel to Switzerland to take part in his first meeting as a member of the UCI Equipment and New Technology Commission.

It was a genuinely significant moment—not just personally, but for the discipline of bike fitting as a whole. For the first time, a practitioner whose primary focus is the interface between rider and machine is part of these conversations at the highest level of the sport.

The Commission itself is deliberately small. Being entrusted with one of those positions carries a clear responsibility: to contribute thoughtfully, objectively, and in the best interests of cycling as a whole.

What stood out most during this meeting was the depth and seriousness with which equipment innovation is being considered. Decisions made in this environment shape not only elite competition, but also influence the direction of technology across the wider industry.

Lee's role is to ensure that the rider remains central to those discussions. Performance, safety, and fairness are all ultimately experienced through the human body, and it’s vital that this perspective is properly represented.

He is grateful for the opportunity to contribute, and looks forward to supporting the ongoing work of the Commission in a way that reflects both the responsibility of the role and the importance of the decisions being made.
